We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dr. Andrea Curry. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dr. Andrea below.
Hi Dr. Andrea, thanks for joining us today. Do you think your parents have had a meaningful impact on you and your journey?
My parents raised me to fear God and to work hard. They encouraged me to give everything I do my very best. I remember when I was old enough to drive. I decided to sleep late one Saturday morning. My Mom came into my room and asked if I wanted a car. I enthusiastically answered in the affirmative, she said, “Okay, let’s go fill out job applications.” When I secured the job, my Dad was firm with our agreement. He told me that if my grades dropped or if I got a speeding ticket, I would have to park my car. I learned the value of working hard for something that I really wanted during that experience. I often thank them for not just giving me things but insisting that I earn them, which definitely made me appreciate them so much more.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am a Memphis native who is a proud graduate of Hillcrest High School and Christian Brothers University. I had a dream for 7 years of earning my master’s degree. I deferred that dream until 2012 when I accepted admission into Walden University. From my Master’s in Healthcare Administration, I went on to complete my Ph.D. in Health Services in 2018, also at Walden. I had no clue about what I wanted to do with my degree outside of teaching. I secured two new positions in 2019, the first as adjunct faculty for LeTourneau University and the second as an oncology research manager at West Cancer Center. I also started my dissertation editing consulting in 2019 and have completed over 600 projects including dissertations, PowerPoint presentations, journal articles, etcetera. Last year, I accepted a position as a dissertation editor at the American College of Education. I also joined Liberty University Online as an adjunct instructor.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In 2013, I was unexpectedly laid off. I lost over 50% of my income, and I had no idea what to do. I worked part-time as a certified pharmacy technician at the time. On my way home, I called my pharmacy manager and asked if I could receive more hours. She remarked that I was so calm. I told her that I would likely fall apart later, but I needed to handle business. I remember sitting at my desk with tears streaming down my face that same day as I applied for countless positions. It was such a tough time, and I remember one month of earning less than $900. I stayed focused during that time and completed my master’s degree summa cum laude. I applied for positions for almost 3 years before I was offered a position in my field. I never wavered in what I wanted, and I remained faithful to my job even though I wanted more for my life. That situation showed me that I am stronger than I knew.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
My market is doctoral students. One of the best investments and marketing strategies was the decision to launch my website. The other component of my success besides my unwavering tenacity to always exceed expectations is the impact I have made on my clients. My business is fueled by constant referrals. It means a lot when others think so highly of you to refer you to their colleagues. I have assisted clients all over the world with their dissertation editing needs, and I find great comfort in the fact that my reputation precedes me.
