We were lucky to catch up with Dr. Alexa Martin, Md recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dr. Alexa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Setting up an independent practice is a daunting endeavor. Can you talk to us about what it was like for you – what were some of the main steps, challenges, etc.
When I decided to start my own practice, Intuitive MD, I wasn’t just building a medical office—I was redefining how healthcare should be delivered. After years in traditional clinical settings, where I was seeing 20+ patients a day and fighting an uphill battle against a broken system, I realized that if I wanted to truly help people transform their health, I needed to step outside of the conventional model.
The Early Days & Key Steps
The first steps were vision and courage—I had to be clear about the kind of practice I wanted to create and brave enough to step away from the security of a traditional role. I knew I wanted to focus on whole-body medicine, longevity, and transformation, helping people reverse disease and optimize their lives through personalized care.
From a logistical standpoint, I had to:
Establish my business structure – Choosing the right legal and financial framework.
Clarify my niche & brand – Differentiating myself in a world of concierge and corporate wellness.
Develop my service model – Offering high-touch, comprehensive health audits, second opinions, and 90-day life transformations instead of traditional rushed visits.
Build my client base – I started with referrals, social media, and speaking engagements.
Transition from insurance-based medicine – I made the decision early on to operate outside of insurance, focusing on direct, personalized care that allows for deeper healing.
Challenges & Lessons Learned
One of the biggest challenges was mindset—leaving behind the predictability of employment and trusting that I could build something sustainable. I also had to navigate pricing my expertise appropriately and educating people on the value of investing in their long-term health.
What I’d Do Differently
I would hire a business strategist sooner—someone who specializes in scaling medical and wellness-based businesses. The early days were filled with trial and error, and while I learned a lot, I could have accelerated my growth with the right mentorship.
Advice for Someone Starting Their Own Practice
Get clear on your WHY – Your mission needs to be bigger than just running your own business.
Build your practice around your lifestyle – Not the other way around.
Think beyond traditional healthcare – Be open to new models of care that serve both you and your patients better.
Don’t be afraid to charge for your expertise – You’re offering transformation, not just appointments.
Get the right support – A business coach, a legal expert, and a community of like-minded professionals will be invaluable.
Establishing my own practice has been the most rewarding decision of my career. It’s allowed me to provide life-changing care while designing a business that aligns with my values. For anyone considering making the leap, trust yourself—your patients are out there waiting for the care only you can provide.
Dr. Alexa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’ve always been fascinated by the intersection of medicine, transformation, and human potential—but after years of practicing in traditional healthcare settings, I knew the system wasn’t designed to truly heal people. It was built to manage symptoms, not to help people optimize their lives. That realization led me to start Intuitive MD, where I combine evidence-based medicine, whole-body wellness, and personalized health consulting to help people achieve longevity, vitality, and peak performance.
How I Got Into This Work
I trained as a board-certified physician, working in high-volume clinics where I saw 20+ patients a day. It didn’t take long for me to realize that rushed appointments and one-size-fits-all treatment plans weren’t enough. My most successful patients were the ones who worked with me outside of the traditional system, receiving deeper guidance, accountability, and strategic interventions that went beyond prescriptions and quick check-ups.
I started Intuitive MD to give people exactly that—a high-touch, personalized approach to medicine that addresses the root causes of their health challenges while optimizing their mind, body, and future.
What I Do & Who I Help
My work is for high-achievers, executives, and visionaries who are looking for more than just basic healthcare. They’re ready to:
Reverse chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic dysfunction.
Lose weight sustainably (without extreme dieting or short-term fixes).
Optimize energy, longevity, and performance for a longer, healthier life.
Get a second opinion when they feel unheard or dismissed in traditional healthcare.
Design a life that aligns with their best self—mentally, physically, and emotionally.
How I Solve Problems Differently
Unlike traditional medicine, my approach is:
Deep & Comprehensive – I take time to understand every aspect of a patient’s lifestyle, health history, and goals.
Science-Driven & Personalized – Using DNA testing, biological age assessments, and continuous glucose monitoring, I create tailored strategies that go beyond generic medical advice.
Integrative & Whole-Body Focused – I incorporate mindset coaching, energy work, and high-performance strategies into my medical practice.
Accountability-Based – My clients aren’t left to figure things out alone—I provide high-touch guidance to help them implement real change.
What Sets Me Apart?
I’m not just a doctor—I’m a strategist, a coach, and a consultant. My work is about more than just treating disease—it’s about helping people design a life they love and a body that can sustain it.
What I’m most proud of? The transformations. Seeing clients go from exhausted and stuck to energized, empowered, and thriving. Watching people reverse their diabetes, reclaim their confidence, and redefine their future.
What I Want You to Know
If you feel like traditional healthcare is failing you, if you’ve tried everything and still don’t feel your best, if you’re tired of being told that your symptoms are just part of aging or stress—I’m here to tell you that there’s another way.
Your health isn’t just about numbers on a lab test. It’s about how you feel, function, and show up in your life. If you’re ready for a deeper level of care, one that prioritizes you as a whole person, I invite you to connect with me.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience isn’t just about bouncing back—it’s about adapting, learning, and coming back stronger. One of the pivotal moments in my journey was being told by a college advisor that I shouldn’t pursue medicine. For years, I carried that doubt, but deep down, I knew I had a calling to help people at the deepest level. Instead of giving up, I doubled down, found my own way, and became a doctor on my terms. Later, I faced another challenge—burnout. Working in traditional medicine, seeing 20+ patients a day, I realized I was constantly treating symptoms but not transforming lives the way I wanted. So I pivoted. I walked away from a stable, well-paying job to create Intuitive MD, where I could practice medicine holistically—blending science, whole-body wellness, and longevity strategies. That decision wasn’t easy, but resilience is about trusting yourself even when the path ahead is uncertain. Today, I help high-achievers optimize their health, reverse disease, and redesign their lives—because resilience is at the core of every transformation.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
In the world of high-touch, personalized wellness, trust is everything. I don’t focus on mass marketing—I focus on deep relationships, results, and word-of-mouth referrals. The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been delivering exceptional, transformative experiences that make my clients want to refer me to others. Whether it’s a 90-day transformation, a high-level executive audit, or an in-depth second opinion, I go beyond conventional medicine to address mind, body, and soul. My clients come to me not just because of what I do, but because of how I do it—with care, precision, and a deep understanding of their goals.
Additionally, strategic partnerships and thought leadership have been key. I speak at events, appear on podcasts, and engage in high-value discussions about health optimization, longevity, and performance. I don’t chase clients—I create value, I educate, and I position myself as the person they need when they’re ready to take their health to the next level.
