We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful DP the Unknown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with DP the Unknown below.
DP the Unknown, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
As an artist, taking risks in my music career is both exhilarating and nerve-wracking. Releasing my music to the world is a vulnerable experience as I am exposing my innermost thoughts and emotions to the public. However, at the same time, it is an incredibly liberating feeling as I get to express myself in a way that feels true to who I am.
It can be tempting to play it safe and stick to a formula that I know will be well received, but I also know that without taking risks, I won’t be able to grow as an artist.
Putting out my first EP titled “Gone Fishing” in 2019 was a significant risk that I took, but it has paid off in ways that I could never have imagined. I put my heart and soul into creating the EP, and I was thrilled to receive such positive feedback from my listeners. The fact that it led to great opportunities in music is something that I am incredibly grateful for. It’s not always easy to step outside of your comfort zone, but the rewards are often worth it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is DP the Unknown and my pronouns are she/they. I’m a queer artist and producer from San Diego, California. My brother, J.A., introduced me to recording, and I fell in love with making music instantly.
I’ve released three EPs so far: “Gone Fishing,” “Safe Travels,” and “Find Comfort.” My music is mostly alternative R&B, and I’m always pushing myself to experiment with different sounds and genres. As a black womxn, I’m inspired by other black womxn artists and hope to inspire others through my music as well.
For me, music is about connection and transcendence. I want my music to sit with people for a long time and to create a space for people to feel seen and heard. I believe that music has the power to bring people together and to create positive change in the world.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Ultimately, my goal and mission as an artist is to create music that is honest, vulnerable, and authentic. I want to inspire others to embrace their own truth and to feel empowered to express themselves in their own unique way. By sharing my own journey through music, I hope to create a space for connection and understanding.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Amplify and invest in artists
