We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Doug Swinton. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Doug below.
Alright, Doug thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Let’s go back in time to when you were an intern or apprentice – what’s an interesting story you can share from that stage of your career?
I went to art college and learned nothing. I spent almost 4 years and got nothing from it, yet here I am making a living from art.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I could see it would take some time to make money from being an artist. I realized I would need to make an income outside of art to support the art. I kept many irons in the fire all leading to the support to be able to paint for a living. It has taken some 30 years but it has all led to a career in the arts.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish the world had shown me all the jobs one can have in the arts. Even in art school they never discussed all the jobs you could have.

Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
When we are not at the easel painting we still are creating. We are always creating. I almost never stops. Its in your soul. It can be tough to come out of a painting session and get back into reality.
