We recently connected with Doubra Etale and have shared our conversation below.
Doubra , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.
The biggest risk I have taken so far would be embarking on this journey to becoming a global superstar. Growing up as a kid in the city of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, I will always spend time alone listening, singing and dancing to the music I loved as that brought me joy. Knowing I had a pleasant voice and the ability to write songs I decided to start rapping as a kid in middle school. With doubt that I’d be able to make a career out of music in Nigeria, I chose to stop making music and focus on my education. On graduating high school and moving to the United States for college I was fortunate to be surrounded by a group of artists and creatives that also share my passion for ART which reignited the fire in me and inspired me to chase the dream that I had as a child that wanted to be a “Rockstar”. I know now that I am capable of shaping my future and grabbing my destiny by the neck. Although the road is tough and challenging, I find innovative ways to solve my challenges with the help and support from the people around me and that has helped me grow, become a better artist, and design a foundation for success which I will follow.
Doubra , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Doubra Etale (Doubzz), I am a practicing musician with immense talent and passion for art. I was drawn to music by my love for the songs I listened to growing up. However it was until fall 2022 that I truly made the choice to chase my dream and take my talents to the next level, to a bigger stage. I then started by writing songs in my room, got studio recording equipment and started the process or recording songs. What’s unique about my music is the originality I bring in merging both the African and American worlds and culture into songs, through the use of real emotions, experiences and impecable penmanship to create art that is easy to digest and relatable to any listener despite culture, race or social upbringing. I am very proud of how far I have come in such a short time. It may not seem like much but I’ve been able to gather enough resources, slowly build a team that supports my vision, and put in effort daily to becoming a better artist as well as creating documentation of the journey as I go. I’m very excited for my upcoming release, it’s going to be a wonder called “Paradise” that expresses the trials we all face as individuals but shown in a happier more positive light in order to bare a breathe of hope to whomever is listening. So if you’re reading this, I ask you to join in on the Journey as you are part of the community I aim to build.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I believe my entire journey is defined by resiliency, but to pinpoint a story I’ll choose what I faced when working on my debut release. Coming into the industry, I had planned to achieve great heights but all that will be unattainable without a start and I think every artist would like to come in with a bang!! As for my self, I went through a list of songs I had written that I thought would be the perfect introduction for myself. There came about “Ecstasy” my debut track, a love Ballard. I was certain that the track had enough potential to give me my breakthrough in the music industry However, that wasn’t the case. After the composition of the song, I took it to a studio in the metro area of Minnesota. In recording the track I was presented an opportunity by the studio engineer for a licensing gig to pitch the song for shows in the United States. As a young enthusiastic adult I bought into the idea and wanted to go ahead with it. I believed that would be a chance to get publicity and possibly also make profit off the song. A contract was created but didn’t go to plan as some miscommunication between the parties involved led to termination of the contract. I was bummed at the outcome as I didn’t get as much publicity as anticipated off the song but didn’t let the discourage me as I was able to find other way to promote and get a fair amount of streams, views on social media and fan interaction. I sought out more organic ways of promotion and mapped out a plan I’ll utilise in the promotion of my future tracks. The stress of an artist can be sometimes unbearable but I do not let that prevent me from working towards my goals.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy or what I have seen work would be the utilisation of content creation. Personally I wasn’t too fond of the idea of being a content creator myself but I was quick to realise it’s one of the easiest ways to reach a new demographic of individuals that are new to your work and pitch yourself to them. So mixing the use of social media, especially an app like TIk tok which various users have been able to achieve virality and stardom just through the click of a “record” button with the quality and consistency I put into my music is what has fostered growth in my clientele as well as spreading my name in the community by the use of word of mouth and slowly building a presence in the community.
