We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Doryon McBride a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Doryon, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Almost all entrepreneurs have had to decide whether to start now or later? There are always pros and cons for waiting and so we’d love to hear what you think about your decision in retrospect. If you could go back in time, would you have started your business sooner, later or at the exact time you started?
If I could go back in time I would’ve started my business later. When I started my business I was an immature 19 year old. As in Immature, I mean business wise not immature acts. I was not cut out to be a business owner let alone an entrepreneur. Granted, I had the drive the hustle and the motivation but I didn’t know how to run a business. I was just having fun making money. From then to now, there have been a lot of obstacles that my business had to face just from me learning the ins and out, the do’s and don’t.
Around that time in my life, I was still trying to figure out who I was and what was my purpose. I was a college drop out who was all about a dollar. That’s it. That’s all. When I discovered lash extensions, it was another get rich quick scheme that me and friend thought about. And it worked for the moment.
If I would’ve started my business a little later in life, it probably could have been more easier for me because by then I would have known more about the business side of things. Things like building business credit, making a business plan, opening a bank account and managing the money that your business makes.
The only thing that would have changed would be the knowledge that I had about the new business I was running. I still have the hustle, the motivation and the drive for my business. I’m just more hungry for success!

Doryon, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am Doryon McBride, the owner of The Real Lash Plug. Where we specialize in applying eyelash extensions to the natural eyelash. We provide services for classic, hybrid, volume, and mega volume lash sets. There are also courses available for those that would like to start their career as a lash technician and those who would like to further their education to become a lash technician.
The Real Lash Plug was founded in 2017 with little to no money to invest. I got into the beauty|lash industry by realizing what I loved about myself the most. I loved how beautiful I was. I loved how wearing lashes added some glam to the natural beauty I already had. That feeling of confidence was like no other. So when I started my business, my goal was to help women feel as confident as I felt when I put those lashes on. That’s what sets me apart from others. It’s not just about the money because you can get your lashes done anywhere for any price. It’s about how you feel after you got your lashes. I want to help you feel like a million bucks when you get off my table.
My perseverance with my business is something that I am most proud of. It’s been a long 7 years of doing lashes, and I didn’t give up. I could’ve gave up so many times because of the fear of failure. Just knowing that it’s a chance that I could loss it all was scary.. That’s when faith comes in. My faith wasn’t as big back then as it is now. It’ll take me more than two hands to count how many times I was done doing lashes, but God says he has a bigger purpose for me when it comes to my business. So being disciplined, putting my trust in him, and keeping faith is what has got my this far. And it’s gonna go every futher!
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that my business was just for the moment. I realized that it’s my legacy that I’m building for my child. This business will be something that I can pass along to her when it’s time.
Can you talk to us about how your funded your business?
All I had was $400 until my next check, and that money was for my car note and insurance. I took a risk and used the money to take a course that taught me how to do lash extensions. I would never regret that decision.
