Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dorretta Richardson. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dorretta, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
At Msrettarosscurls, our mission is to empower every curly-haired client to embrace, celebrate, and truly love their natural curls. We believe every curl is unique, and we’re here to nurture, define, and elevate your natural beauty.”
Msrettarosscurls is more than just a business — it’s a reflection of my passion, my journey, and my purpose. As someone who has experienced the struggles and the beauty of natural curls firsthand, I understand the importance of feeling seen, celebrated, and confident in your own hair. Every client who walks through our doors is a reminder of why I started: to create a safe, empowering space where curls are not just managed, but embraced and honored. Watching someone fall in love with their natural texture — sometimes for the first time — is the most rewarding part of what I do. That joy, that transformation, is what makes this work so deeply special to me.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Curly Specialist with a Smile
I’m 59 and absolutely love being creative in my work as a Curly Hair Specialist. My journey began over three decades ago, born from my own struggles with my big, frizzy hair. Not knowing how to manage it, I turned to cosmetology for direction—and it changed my life.
I deeply understand the unique challenges that come with curls, coils, and waves. That’s why listening is at the heart of what I do. Building trust with my clients allows us to overcome insecurities and celebrate their natural beauty together.
My passion keeps growing through continued education and the inspiration of working with a fabulous team. I’m committed to helping every client learn how to pamper their curls—because when you understand shaping, hydration, and proper care, you unlock the true beauty of how your hair naturally grows.
There’s nothing more rewarding than watching clients embrace their curl patterns, smile with confidence, and maybe even do a happy dance! It’s an honor to be part of their curl journey.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
1. Personal Experience = Relatability
You get it because you’ve lived it. Clients with curly hair often feel misunderstood in traditional salons. Your own story of struggle and transformation makes you relatable and trustworthy. That builds an emotional connection right from the start.
2. Specialization
By niching down into curly hair, you’ve positioned yourself as an expert in a space that really needs it. Curly clients actively seek out specialists who understand their texture—and you do, deeply.
3. Empathy & Listening
Your emphasis on listening and building trust is huge. People with curls often carry insecurities tied to years of bad haircuts or being told their natural texture isn’t “professional” or “manageable.” Your chair becomes a safe space.
4. Client Education
Teaching your clients how to care for and style their curls gives them lasting value beyond the salon visit. It builds loyalty and turns clients into your biggest advocates.
5. Ongoing Learning & Team Inspiration
Staying inspired and current with techniques through continuing education keeps your services fresh and effective. Being around a supportive team amplifies that energy.
6. Celebration & Positivity
The “happy dance” moment is everything! That joy and confidence you create in people is powerful—and contagious. It leads to referrals, glowing reviews, and word-of-mouth growth.
7. Authentic Branding
Your message is consistent, heartfelt, and personal. That kind of authenticity is magnetic in a saturated market. People are drawn to real.
