We recently connected with Dorothea Gloria and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorothea, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
One of the most meaningful projects I had the privilege to work on was a captivating children’s show titled “Ice Cream Dream,” which was performed at the prestigious New Victory LabWorks. This production was particularly special as it not only aimed to entertain but also to educate and celebrate cultural diversity.
“Ice Cream Dream” intricately wove the rich traditions of the Indian festival, “Nag Panchami,” into its storyline, providing young audiences with a unique glimpse into this vibrant celebration. The festival, which honors serpents and their significance in Indian mythology, served as a fascinating cultural backdrop for the show.
What made “Ice Cream Dream” even more remarkable was its commitment to inclusivity and representation. The entire cast comprised immigrant artists, each bringing their own personal narratives and cultural experiences to the performance. This diversity enriched the show, creating a tapestry of stories and perspectives that resonated deeply with the audience.
Collaborating with such a talented and diverse group of performers was an incredibly rewarding experience. It underscored the importance of storytelling in bridging cultural gaps and fostering a sense of community. Through “Ice Cream Dream,” we were able to share a piece of Indian heritage with children, instilling in them an appreciation for different cultures and the beauty of inclusivity.

Dorothea, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Dorothea Gloria, and I am proud to be a co-founder of two dynamic theatre companies based in New York City: RiffRaffNYC and TeamTheatre. Both of these companies are dedicated to amplifying the voices and stories of immigrants, reflecting our commitment to fostering diversity and inclusivity within the performing arts.
RiffRaffNYC, in particular, is a testament to our dedication to immigrant representation. In every project we undertake, we ensure that at least 50% of the artists involved are immigrants. This policy is not just a statistic but a core principle that shapes our artistic vision and drives our mission. By providing a platform for immigrant artists, RiffRaffNYC showcases a rich array of perspectives and experiences, creating performances that resonate with authenticity and cultural depth.
TeamTheatre, while also focusing on immigrant narratives, brings together a broader spectrum of voices from different backgrounds. Our productions often explore the intersections of identity, culture, and belonging, aiming to create a dialogue that transcends borders and unites audiences through shared human experiences.
The work we do at both RiffRaffNYC and TeamTheatre is deeply personal and profoundly impactful. It is about more than just putting on a show; it is about creating a space where diverse stories are told, heard, and celebrated. Through our productions, we strive to challenge stereotypes, build empathy, and highlight the contributions of immigrant communities to the cultural tapestry of New York City and beyond.
As a co-founder, I am continually inspired by the incredible talent and resilience of the artists we collaborate with. Their stories not only enrich our performances but also inspire audiences to see the world through a more inclusive and compassionate lens. By elevating immigrant voices, we hope to contribute to a more vibrant and equitable theatre landscape.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
In every project I produce and perform in, I am deeply committed to shining a spotlight on the unique and often untold stories of individuals from diverse backgrounds. In a city as vibrant and multifaceted as New York, where the population is a rich mosaic of cultures from around the globe, I believe it is crucial to create narratives that resonate with this diversity.
New York City is a melting pot, teeming with people whose lives, experiences, and traditions span a multitude of cultures. This diversity is a source of immense strength and beauty, and it is vital that the stories we tell on stage reflect the varied tapestry of the city. By highlighting these unique stories, we provide a platform for voices that are frequently marginalized or overlooked in mainstream media.
I strive to craft performances that delve into the heart of different cultures, exploring their unique experiences and idiosyncrasies. This approach not only enriches the narrative but also fosters a deeper connection with audiences. When people see their own culture, struggles, and triumphs represented authentically on stage, it validates their experiences and creates a powerful sense of belonging.
My passion for these stories stems from a profound belief in the transformative power of theatre. Theatre has the ability to bridge divides, cultivate empathy, and promote understanding across different communities. By telling stories that highlight diverse cultural experiences, we can challenge stereotypes, break down barriers, and celebrate the shared humanity that binds us all.
Each project is an opportunity to explore new cultural landscapes and bring underrepresented stories to the forefront. Whether it’s through the lens of immigrant experiences, cultural traditions, or the nuances of everyday life, my goal is to create a space where everyone can see a reflection of their own lives and stories. This inclusive storytelling not only enriches the artistic landscape but also contributes to a more inclusive and compassionate society.
In essence, my work is driven by the conviction that everyone’s story deserves to be told. By focusing on the unique and often untold narratives of individuals from diverse backgrounds, I hope to inspire audiences, foster a greater understanding of the world we live in, and celebrate the rich cultural heritage that makes New York City such a remarkable place.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
In my view, society can best support artists, creatives, and a thriving creative ecosystem by fostering an environment that nurtures talent and encourages diversity. This involves providing accessible spaces where artists can develop their skills and showcase their work. Such spaces should be inclusive, welcoming artists from all backgrounds, and offering them the resources they need to bring their visions to life.
As a producer, my commitment to this vision is evident in my efforts to support new works that feature original shows and stories. I place a strong emphasis on creating opportunities for immigrant actors who are often overlooked due to their accents or appearance. By casting these talented individuals in roles, I aim to challenge industry norms and highlight the rich, diverse narratives they bring to the stage.
