Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to DorMiya Vance. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, DorMiya thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Coming up with the idea is so exciting, but then comes the hard part – executing. Too often the media ignores the execution part and goes from idea to success, skipping over the nitty, gritty details of executing in the early days. We think that’s a disservice both to the entrepreneurs who built something amazing as well as the public who isn’t getting a realistic picture of what it takes to succeed. So, we’d really appreciate if you could open up about your execution story – how did you go from idea to execution?
I got my start with a great friend and mentor of mine, Shakira. She was doing media and interviews with some great people around our city and i saw her progression. I worked as her intern for a while and then helped produce some of her content. This inspired me. She inspired me along with other great friends of mine that did some amazing things. It all started to rub off on me. I was in college learning to a journalist and I wanted to take this to the next level. I wanted and still want to become a well-know journalist and media personality. So, I took that vision plus skills I had learned under Shakira and from college, and created a foundation for BabyTalkTV, LLC. My brand is a freelance media company that works to educate people on Hip Hop and upcoming artists from various areas.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
BabyTalkTV, LLC is a freelance media company serving primarily communities of color. BTTV aims to be a platform for unique artists and their talents as the grow and expand in their careers. BTTV also aims to educate audiences on the influence of Hip Hop and real world issues.
We produce interviews, articles, and social media content relevant to underground and mainstream artists and news.
BTTV is most proud of being in business for a year while gaining an organic audience during that time. We are still growing and ready to reach more readers.
We would like to help any one need some entry level guidance on being an artist and getting involved with local communities to grow their base.
Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Being authentic. Artists love transparency and people can just be real with them at the beginning. BTTV does that. We do our best to be clear and meet the needs of clients.
We’re still growing but professionalism is key when starting out. BTTV is a community more than a platform, so we want people to like the content and work with us, but we also want them to feel like they can space to be celebrated and praised.
Have you ever had to pivot?
Move to another state was a time the platform had to pivot. We’re still gaining more infantry about our new area and what artists we can reach out to for support. We’ve also going through a slight change in what we post to ensure more engagement that can lead to more people join our community.
Overall, it’s a good pivot. Branching out is very important and BTTV really wants to become a household name, so we’re doing what we can to stay relevant and impactful.
