We recently connected with Dorimar Ferrer and have shared our conversation below.
Dorimar , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
I started to love the theater at the early age of 7 in Puerto Rico, and from that moment, the theater became a part of me. My theater teacher allowed me to participate in my first play to celebrate the history of Puerto Rico. Since then, I have loved acting.
Dorimar , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a Latinx actress and theatre administrator from Bayamón, Puerto Rico. I started in theater at the young age of 7 in Puerto Rico, and from that moment, the theater became part of me. I worked as Executive Director of the organization Cazateatro Bilingual Theater Group.
Cazateatro’s goal is to share the Latino culture with Memphis’s city through the performing arts and cultural events, building a bridge to close and solidify union, communication, and family interaction between different cultures.
My personal goal is to every day bring my passion for theater and my Latino culture to the communities in Memphis. I hope to show the communities that the arts are for everyone, no matter their language or social status. Through the arts, each human being is unique, relatable, and capable of creating great things together. Together we can make a better city.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My daily goal is to bring Latino culture to every place in Shelby County. My mission is to offer more bilingual artistic opportunities for our children and more diversity in the arts. The Latino artists need opportunities to be creative in Memphis 365 days a year, not only during Hispanic Heritage Month.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The arts are lovely and brighten our lives. That is why we must think about artists 365 days a year. As a society, we can share your publications, buy your art, attend your presentation and respect your work.
Sometimes many people forget that being an artist is a job like any other; we must respect it and pay for the services. Many times art is undervalued.
In addition, as a community, we can financially or volunteer to help arts organizations that work with artists to bring art to our community.
