We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dorian DuBois. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dorian below.
Dorian, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I first delved into photography, I turned to Instagram influencers like Lindsay Adler and David Suh for inspiration, absorbing all their content. As my interest grew more serious, I invested in courses and attended in-person shooting sessions to emulate the techniques showcased in their work. This hands-on approach helped me identify my preferred photography style and niche. I began studying how models posed, following them on Instagram for insights. One fortunate day, I connected with a model who generously shared tips on posing and enhancing my images. This invaluable guidance propelled me forward in my photography journey. Next, I began following my favorite online Photoshop expert, PixImperfect, and immersed myself in his numerous tutorials on YouTube. These tutorials helped me refine my skills and develop my own unique style in photo editing.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was drawn into photography because creativity runs deep in my family. My brother was a graphic designer and artist, as are my nieces and nephews, and my mother had a passion for photography. Initially, I purchased my first camera to promote a clothing line I owned at the time. What started as a small interest in promoting my brand evolved into a realization of the powerful message a simple image can convey. I take pride in my ability to capture a photo that tells its own story, uniquely mine. Being able to recognize my work among others means a great deal to me. Growing up, I often felt that artistic talent was something my family possessed more than I did. Yet, over time, I discovered new passions almost accidentally and fell in love with the creative process.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
I believe it was staying true to myself without apology. Authenticity attracts people, and you shouldn’t have to compromise who you are to succeed in business. Boundaries are important, but maintaining your authenticity is crucial.

Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
One of my favorite books is “Can’t Hurt Me” by David Goggins. Mastering how I perceive challenging situations and embracing forward momentum has been instrumental in overcoming numerous barriers in my field. To enhance my focus on content creation and posting, I turned to “The 12 Week Year” by Brian Moran, which helped me structure a schedule for optimal time management. The synergy between these two books has fostered a mindset that empowers me to tackle any photography or business challenge, no matter its complexity.
