We were lucky to catch up with Dorian Clark recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dorian , appreciate you joining us today. Getting that first client is always an exciting milestone. Can you talk to us about how you got your first customer who wasn’t a friend, family, or acquaintance?
To promote Valentine’s Day orders, I was in the process of creating an ad utilizing sample cupcakes made for work. I had this insane idea to set up an order table on the corner of my house. It took me about two days to plan everything out and make sure I had enough decorations to draw passers-attention. I had cupcakes decorated and more in the oven when Saturday AM arrived. I was nervous, excited, and even hesitant. Because I was afraid, I almost talked myself out of doing it. “Do it now or don’t do it at all; you have to at least try,” we tell ourselves at times. I was ready to go it took about 10 minutes to setup. I’m not kidding when I say that the first lady that came by and tried a sample bought everything off the table, and she’s still a customer today.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Baking became an outlet for me when I began to have health issues. It was also the only thing I had control over. Baking relaxes me so much it’s my happy place whenever I’m in the kitchen. It was suggested that I start a business as a home baker. Due to surgeries and other events, it was on and off for first couple of years. I’ve been more consistent with growing my business the past three years. I create personalized cakes, cupcakes, cakesickles, and chocolate-covered apples, to name a few.
Everyone deserves to feel special on their day. When giving quotes, I’ve observed hesitation with pricing at times, so I always try to have two other options available, that’s budget friend. This has helped me maintain customers while also attracting new.
I’m proud of my progress; I’m self-taught and am always acquiring new skills. I’ll bake a cake, photograph it, and then stare at it for a few moments, thinking to myself, “Wow, I did that!!” Baking is my love, and it shows in my work. Your cake will not only look nice, but it will also taste fantastic.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One of the most significant aspects of my personality is that I keep my word and do what I say. My first destination wedding order was for a three-tier cake with a smaller cake on the side and a groom’s cake. I was so excited that I completely forgot about the dates. I knew I was going to have surgery soon, so I wouldn’t take orders unless they were a month or two out. That wasn’t the case with this order; it was due two weeks after my operation, and I kept blinking at the dates, thinking to myself, “Dang, did I really do that?” I created a checklist of everything I needed, I was travelling out of town and didn’t know if there were any specialty cake stores in the area; I also didn’t want to put more stress on my body with running around. Nonetheless, the bride was ecstatic and in tears when she saw her cakes; it’s the most amazing feeling to experience someone else’s happiness through something you’ve created. At the end of the evening, I served in heels, and my feet looked like baby sausages, but it was worth it. Whatever is going on in my personal life has no bearing on the way I interact with others. I always try to give it my all and push myself to new heights. I wouldn’t of been able to make any of this happen with the help of my friend.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth is the best source of new clients. People will always remember how you made them feel. When you have excellent service and awesome product, the amount of recommendations you’ll receive is incredible.
