We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dorian Baham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dorian below.
Dorian, appreciate you joining us today. Have you ever had an amazing boss? What did you learn from them? Maybe you can share a story that illustrates the kind of boss they were or maybe you can share your thoughts on what you think made them an awesome person to work for?
The best boss I’ve ever had was my Mom! My mother is the reason behind my entrepreneurship. Through her I was pushed, gifted, guided, schooled, and learned what hustle, sacrifice, hard work, customer service, customer appreciation, and faith was all about. She taught me more than I gave her credit for. Now that she’s deceased and no longer a listening ear, a wise word of advice, a suggestion of business ups and downs….all I have is to reflect from her teachings. She no only was my mentor but also to and for our community. She impacted many lives to become leaders, entrepreneurs, and their own success stories.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I was born into the cosmetology industry. As stated before my mother was one of the greatest and most talented in our community where I’m from. Though I had other dreams of joining the military for better education and travel experience, I also was a caregiver at a very young age and figured the medical field would be my calling but I always somehow wound up playing with scissors in my Mom’s salon when she wasn’t looking lol. I never knew what greatness a real stylist or entrepreneur carried until I became one. At the age of 12 I started picking up clippers and scissors and cutting hair. In high-school I had really good grades and took courses to pursue some sort of position in the medical field, however I had improved so much in barbering that by age 15 I started having clients along with using my siblings as mannequins to better my skills and craft. My mom was always doing cosmetology and she has trained up my older sister the same. Once my skill improved my Mom opened up a salon by the time I was 16 years old as a family owned and operated business to continue training me up. I had a hand in the name of the salon inwhich still exists today…. “Picture Me Rollin’ Salon.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I’ve been constantly throughout the years working, working, working. The way I’ve been taught customer service and customer appreciation gaining new clients has been easy for me. I really love what I do. I have been a Pilar in my community by giving back not only to my community but clients as well. I do promotions, I’ve giving complimentary services and I’ve been humble, inviting, knowledgeable within my career. Word of mouth has been huge for me along my journey. Nowadays, it’s technology type of Era so StyleSeat and social media is an influence to gaining new clientele.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
As stated before my Mom was my influencer ….my business partner and mentor over the last two decades. I took ownership of the preexisting business in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina happened to my city of New Orleans. She was anticipating taking her hands out the business prior to Hurricane Katrina so when it happened a recess of 8 months was taken. I then booked a hotel for the 1st Mardi Gras back in New Orleans and put the word out about me doing hair again. I was blessed and flooded with clientele. When my Mom witnessed my determination, drive, hustle, and dedication of my existing clients and the new clients…..she then had the conversation to hand over the torch and I then took over the business from that day on.
