We were lucky to catch up with Doretha Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.
Doretha, appreciate you joining us today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
Initially, I was doing candles, tea light candles, carpet freshener, and then one night I went to sleep and woke up in the middle of the night and something told me to YouTube resin and so I did and I kept watching videos and I realize that I had everything that I needed for it except for the resin so I decided to order resin and give it a shot and next thing you know everybody wanted to place an order for customized resin dominos and coasters! I’ve learned that resin could take 24-48 hours to cure… someone told me to try a heat mat to help speed the time and it’s been working out for me!

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
If you read about me before you would’ve heard that I was making candles, tea lights and carpet freshener, and now I expand my business and I’m doing resin crafts. This business was started because of my 19-year-old son, who was diagnosed with autism and is still all based around autism.. I use my crafts as a platform to get closer to families that have someone on the spectrum or knows someone on the spectrum. I love to help people who are still learning and struggling with understanding Autsim! There are so many resources out there and I had to learn about them the hard way, so if I am able to help, I would like to do that.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal is to possibly help parents who are new to the spectrum and know very little about it. I’m using my crafts not just to make money, but also use it as a platform to get closer to the people who are just like my son and I! I’ve had this small business for less than a year and it’s been successful and I’ve also been able to meet a lot of people along the way and still in touch with some of the individuals.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about being a resin artist is that I actually really enjoy doing it. It’s so relaxing it’s like I get to do something that I like to do and still make money off of it and meet new people and be able to help some of those people that I meet.
