We recently connected with Dorcas Rainey and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dorcas, thanks for joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have been storytelling through my Instagram account for years and it always received a lot of attention and praise. It was honestly fun and exciting for me to share with my audience. I made dinner one night and decided to post a video of it. The video went viral, getting over half a million views in just a few weeks. It was that moment that showed me I could take this seriously. I was already burnt out from my catering business and this pivot came at the exact right moment.
Dorcas, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I was originally introduced to readers as the owner/operator of Dishing with Dorcas, a small catering business that I ran with my mom. After she passed away in 2021, I lost my passion and zeal for cooking and wanted to share other areas of myself instead. I began to produce food content online and then chose the lifestyle niche so that I could include my every day life, travel, and products that I love. The problem that I solve for my audience is that I give them my honest opinion and suggestions on items they may have had questions about. I also help bring brand awareness to companies who offer products and services that haven’t received a large amount of attention. Influencer marketing is the future and I wanted to be apart of that while making a difference.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is that I get to express my authentic self to the world with confidence. I get to show up as myself, sharing exactly what I like, with my morals and values included. I was a people pleaser for a large part of my life, and being a creative truly helped me end that cycle. Take it or leave it, I’ll be me either way.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creative expression and creative careers are a commitment. Working a 9-5 is not the only way to earn a living, and should not be the only work format that is respected. Creatives work tirelessly to bring their vision to life, often with little money or resources. Even if you don’t understand what someone is doing, show them support anyway. Understanding is an individual experience. It’s refreshing to see people monetize and brand their unique viewpoint.
