We were lucky to catch up with Dontez Craig recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dontez, thanks for joining us today. If you could go back in time do you wish you had started your creative career sooner or later?
Oh yes, very much sooner. I really did wish that I started back in my teens where my creativity was still at all around high with the unlimited drive to create. It also makes me miss the very active imagination I used to have back as a kid. No limitations, no rules, just create without a second thought in mind.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Well, I have been creating music since the days of many music programs while on my dad computer and eventually my own. I always loved making music, rather it was a different genre that I was quite used to. Just creating was something that I loved doing.
I provide music towards the people that are quite interested in hearing. I want to have the same impact that I had when I listened to music or even a moment where a track creates a good memory about their lives.
Not only that, but I think what sets me from the others is that people tend that I always tend to be quite quiet around people, but that’s mostly because I don’t do good talking with strangers at times and also the fear of making a fool out of my self. I’m autistic as well, so me talking to a stranger can be differcult at times.
One of the few things that I’m quite proud of is when people say that when my music affects them in a way.. I sometimes I get comments to keep going from total strangers, which means a lot to me. It really does push me to go forward with my music.
Well, I want folks that I know that make beats and music without having to chase trends. I feel as though you don’t really bandwagon the latest thing to actually create something. Good music exists, rather it’s mainstream or not.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Well all I have done is post music most of the time along with personal things like most people. I’m not really as active on social media and even if I do, I often check on things and go on with my day.
My advice is to just continue being on social media at your own pace, and try not to tag people into your music posts unless they’re ok with it. I used to be one of those folks that would actually do it with people because there were music makers as well. One of them gotten annoyed with it. Make a post about it, needless to say it made me feel quite bad.
It’s also best to network with people who are interested and enjoy your work.
How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
Support the artists that you genuinely enjoy. Like share their music, buy their music, support how much you appreciate their music. If you can hate watch or hate listen then share about it, then you can do the exactly same with arts that you really tend to enjoy.
Creatives could really use that attention.
