We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Donovan Mitchell. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Donovan below.
Alright, Donovan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I’d say early on around 12-13 years old roughly was around that time when I knew I wanted to pursue my art. It was during this time where I joined my very first band with the Short Stop Youth Center as a keyboardist primarily and not long after I took on drums and bass briefly. I also made my early compositions there on a computer with a compatible keyboard I was so intrigued by all the sounds I was able to use to my advantage while at the same time consuming everything there was to consume musically.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My full name is Donovan Marquise Emmanuel Mitchell but as of 2019, I’ve gone by MitcheeVan which is a play off of my last name and the ending of my first name.given to me by a good friend of my dear mother Xander Raymond who granted me that name after listening to one of my original songs entitled “Darkside”. Aside from music I’ve gained a true and genuine appreciation for not only my art but from wide range of different art mediums such as canvas acrylic and oil paint art, murals and sculpting , sketch and photography to name a few. Primarily my art experiences stem from painting and sketching I approach my art visually and reflectively for the most part. A lot of my inspiration comes from nature, Ancient African history/artifacts,royalty and emotional insight from within..When people look at my art I would hope they would gain some sort of closure in their own pursuit of life through their own integrity without feeling the need of any validation from anywhere or anybody for that matter. What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Personally I feel that society shouldn’t antagonize creatives and artists so much for the heart and resilience we have to own completely as creatives when opportunities and results don’t always meet each other half way..
Do you think there is something that non-creatives might struggle to understand about your journey as a creative? Maybe you can shed some light?
Not in all cases but in most cases non creatives from my experience struggle to internally evolve in this world where it’s only two prominent color forces that enables them fully see the bigger picture it’s people that are going take what they feel they can get out of life and then there’s people that are going to take what they can get of nothing..
