Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Donovan Beatty. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Donovan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
Seeing the way my favorite artists are able to not only live but thrive on their own merit and artistry has been one of the biggest driving forces in my musical journey. They are able to do the things they love while making more than enough to live and that is a dream I’ve always had
Donovan, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I started out recording in 2015 but never officially put anything out until 2018 under the label “steady:hyperactive”. The first project I ever released was a 4 song EP titled “Cereal Is a Soup” and eventually followed that up with my first full project “Last Year Local”. Since then I’ve helped manage “s:h” on top of releasing a series of EP’s where each one is produced by a single producer. On top of being in various publications including “Lyrical Lemonade” we’ve thrown two Juneteenth festival at our hometowns (Winston Salem, NC) Cultural Art Center (SECCA)
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A large part of my post high school career I felt as though school was not for me and it may have been more I wasn’t ready. I took a couple years off to work full time and hone myself as a person and have came back into school feeling great about the direction my life is headed and the work I’m putting in. It feels good to feel like you’re on the right path
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is the reception when it’s all said and done. Seeing the time and effort you put in being consumed and enjoyed by the masses is a glorious feeling. Watching the days, weeks, months, and years come into fruition into something people have feelings about will always be satisfying
