Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Donny Zanger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Donny, appreciate you joining us today. Any advice for creating a more inclusive workplace?
I believe in creating an inclusive workplace by working with people from different races and religions. Diverse perspectives lead to better ideas and stronger teams. I’ve seen how inclusion fosters creativity and understanding, while exclusion stifles growth. For me, it’s about respecting everyone’s unique background and making sure all voices are valued. This approach not only builds a better team but creates a space where everyone feels they belong.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Donny, and I’ve been an entrepreneur for as long as I can remember. I’ve launched several successful businesses, all of them bootstrapped, including a lead generation platform for contractors, a pressurized wall company, and even a tech tool for backing up iPhone music. Across my ventures, my focus has always been on solving real problems and creating value for customers, whether it’s helping contractors get quality leads, simplifying data recovery, or streamlining home improvement processes.
How I Got Started
I’ve always had a passion for building things—from actual structures to businesses. My entrepreneurial journey began in college, where I started my first company building decks. That early success taught me the value of hard work, creativity, and persistence. Over time, I expanded into new industries, always looking for ways to improve on outdated systems or create something that didn’t exist before.
What I Offer
One of my current focuses is BuildWrks, a platform that connects contractors with high-quality leads. What sets us apart is our vetting process and commitment to giving contractors exclusive, high-value leads, unlike other platforms that distribute leads to multiple contractors.
What Sets Me Apart
What makes my work unique is my dedication to creating solutions that are not just innovative but practical. I’m not interested in following trends—I want to build things that genuinely help people and solve problems. I’m also incredibly proud of the teams I’ve built along the way. I’ve always prioritized inclusivity, working with people from diverse backgrounds to create better, more creative solutions.
What I’m Most Proud Of
I’m proud of my journey—bootstrapping every venture, navigating challenges, and creating businesses that have made millions in revenue. I’m also proud of the relationships I’ve built, with clients, colleagues, and teams who believe in the vision.
What I Want You to Know
Whether you’re a contractor looking for better leads, or simply someone interested in what’s possible when innovation meets practicality, I’d love to connect. My goal has always been to build meaningful, impactful solutions—and I hope to continue doing that for years to come.
Can you talk to us about your experience with selling businesses?
Yes, I have sold a business—Data Recovery 47, a company that specialized in recovering lost or damaged digital data. It was a challenging yet rewarding experience, and I learned a lot during the process.
The business was successful because it solved a critical problem for clients: recovering priceless data from damaged devices or corrupted storage. By focusing on exceptional service and building trust with customers, the company grew steadily. When the time came to sell, I knew it was the right decision to make room for new ventures.
Lessons for Entrepreneurs Looking to Sell Their Businesses
1. Build a Solid Foundation:
A business with a clear mission, efficient operations, and strong customer loyalty is much more attractive to potential buyers. Focus on building systems that don’t rely solely on you, so the business can run smoothly without your day-to-day involvement.
2. Understand Your Value:
Know your business’s worth by thoroughly analyzing your revenue, profits, and market potential. Be prepared to demonstrate its value to potential buyers with clear data and a compelling story.
3. Be Transparent:
During the sales process, transparency is key. Be upfront about the strengths and weaknesses of your business. Buyers appreciate honesty and are more likely to trust you if you’re forthright.
4. Prepare for the Emotional Aspect:
Selling a business can be emotional, especially if you’ve poured years of effort into it. Take time to reflect on your goals and what you want from the sale. For me, knowing it was the right step forward helped me let go and focus on new opportunities.
5. Find the Right Buyer:
Look for someone who shares your vision or will take the business to the next level. It’s rewarding to know that the legacy you built will continue to thrive.
Selling Data Recovery 47 taught me the importance of planning, adaptability, and trusting the process. For any entrepreneur considering a sale, it’s about more than just the money—it’s about ensuring your hard work leaves a lasting impact.
Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I met Denis in one of the most unexpected ways—he was installing a wall for me. During our conversation, he mentioned how much he hated his boss. Something about his honesty and the way he carried himself caught my attention.
At the time, I was thinking about starting another business and realized Denis had the skills and drive I was looking for in a partner. I suggested we team up and build something together. What started as a casual conversation turned into the beginning of a great partnership. Denis brought incredible expertise and a no-nonsense attitude that matched perfectly with my vision. It’s funny how chance encounters can lead to life-changing opportunities.
