We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Donna Mitchell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Donna, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
As a teenager, I always knew that music was a huge impact on how I would understand being adopted. Understanding my life at a young age was different for me so I buried myself into music because it came natural to me and soothing to my soul. So during my era it was easy to tune into the avenues of seeing myself in the music videos, singing at at talent shows and bringing it to life on my carport at home. I really soaked my thoughts in following the steps of the legends, Quincy Jones and Berry Gordy. So I would tell myself that one day I would have my own Motown.
I never knew the name or anything at that time but one thing for sure, I knew that I would be doing music. The older I became the more clearer it would come to me and then I began to write in my journal all of the time. DE Music was stuck in my head simply because Donna Elaine is my name so it made sense. To fast forward, when I lost my mother in 2012, with one foot in heaven and one here on earth she would whisper the name to me and at that point is when it all came together for me that it was time. At that very moment is when DE Music Management was born.

Donna, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
DE Music comes from a deep part of my soul , my passion for music and helping others will make a difference in this music community. People don’t understand how I move because I get out of my own way and follow God’s lead. I don’t do anything that is not of HIM for my life. What HE gives to me is what I give to other souls. In this industry it really does take people that genuinely care that gets people to the next level. I want to help artists in their music career success. I seek everyday to be more knowledgeable and prepared to have my company be a huge impact. I come with a nurturing spirit so I have now been branded “Momma Donna” in today’s music industry. The doors have opened and I don’t hesitate to walk in with my head held high. This I can be so proud as it sets a standard for my company to amplify my passion and see it spread throughout the world.
DE Music pours deep into the artist soul and pull out their very best. Here are just three points I like to share. First, what I really take pride in is consultations so I can be one on one with the aspiring artist. Secondly, booking the artist is another core key in my business so that I can connect with other sources and share with them the standards I would like for the artist to gain from performing on their platforms. Third, talent representation so that I can show up on the scene and represent the artist, kind of like a Mom so that I can be sure that they are taken care of and not mistreated.
When I turned 50 years old, God sat it all in my lap and I have not or will I look back. Stay tuned to see much more coming from DE Music and “Momma Donna”.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
As I continue to show up without hesitation, my spirit and personality never fails because its not fake. Anytime you see me, I am the same person. I am told so many times that you are like a magnet and it just feels good being around you. I know that God gives everyone a gift and even with my gift of discernment also comes my love for people. It’s when you know your purpose and everyday of your life, you walk that walk. I have so many souls that reach out to me and I truly take the time to respond back to everyone in some kind of way. I have to add that I am not a huge fan of social media because I am still old school and I like the personal approach. At 55 years old, I am able to connect with anyone no matter what age or personality they have.
As of today, I have met so many beautiful souls and I only have God to thank for it all. He gives me just who and what I need when I need it.

How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I want to tune into this question because it is so important to not take this area in you life for granted. I do understand that there are seasons in life but even through those seasons you don’t burn any bridges. The seasons can bring you quality in life and staying connected to that only makes it better. So be sure to be kind and firm at the same time and some people may say “Keep it Real” because this is brand loyalty. In some cases, when the season may not be all so great still stay consistent because this can either make or break your brand. No matter what, you want to always have someone you crossed paths with to say the same thing when your name or brand is displayed.
So remember to keep a positive outlook on life. This can take you a long way in your brand and the relationships to come.
