We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Donn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Donn, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I would say every album that I create is meaningful and unique In its own way.But if I had to select one it would be my first full length project which is titled “Passion” I had been making music for many years before this album came to be.To use a sports reference I would look at all the music I made before that point like college basketball putting in my time and perfecting my craft.When it came to Passion and all my work after it’s like ok now we are in the big leagues or the NBA to keep in line with the previous reference.All that being said before that album I had even considered to stop making music all together but I did have a story to tell within my album.After the success of this project it showed me I was on the right path so it’s meaningful to me for so many reasons but being the first of many will always hold a special place within my catalog.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well I am a hiphop artist from Toronto,Ontario,Canada
I got into the music business through my love and passion for music as a whole.Being that I am operating as an independent business/artist I’m always looking at creative things I can do with the release of a project to give people something more then just the music itself.So weather that be with a hard copy of release or limited merchandise I try and always add something special for the people who support me with every full length album I create.
In terms of what I feel sets me apart is that i truly care about the artistic side of this especially when it comes to the release of an album,I am very hands on with all my cover art for one.I want to create a mood/experience for the listener it’s not just a bunch of singles thrown together.so generally there will be an overall theme or feeling to my albums.I also feel while yes it is important to have a great single to hook listeners in it is just as important to give them a quality album/catalog it’s like if you go to a nice restaurant you enjoy a nice appetizer but if the main course isn’t great what does that say about the restaurant.So think of the albums as the main course and i always deliver a 5 star dish.
I am most proud of my full length albums as i mentioned earlier.I feel that it’s a lost art at times the way people consume music with streaming and playlists which is all great but I pride myself on making great full body’s of work so i would say I am most proud of my catalog of albums.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I would say getting the feedback from your audience is most rewarding.If it’s from listeners who have been following the journey or someone hearing you for the first time and they tell you about the feeling they get from the music.Or even in terms of doing live performances that is probably one of my most favourite parts about all of this getting to present the music live to an audience and getting the reactions from the audience.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
I want to be viewed as one of the best to ever do it.In many ways that’s all perspective but I also want listeners to appreciate my catalog.Particularly in terms of goals we got to many to name but I would like to continue to challenge myself with every album I create that’s just a personal goal.To try and expand my fan base and maximize my audience with every release I have.
