We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Donise Johnson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Donise below.
Alright, Donise thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
I came up with the name of my company in grad school. I was in my final semester and the requirement to graduate was to make a professional website with a portfolio of your latest work. I explained to my professor that I was struggling to find a name with meaning but short and sweet. He then suggested I use my initials, but spell my last name initial out, and since videography falls under the media category just add that at the end. Thus DJAYMEDIA was born.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I first took an interest in videography back in high school, where I was assigned to a radio/tv class. Our class would consist of making commercials and other various video assignments. I realized, I enjoyed putting together video content, and wanted to take it serious. I ended up continuing my education by studying film/video at Penn State University Main Campus. I ended up going to the military after graduating college in hopes of getting a military occupational specialty as a combat videographer and to pay off my student loans faster, but that journey took a different route. After getting out the military, I went to get my master’s degree in Multimedia Communications at Academy of Art University in San Francisco. It was then that the seed was planted in my head to start my videography business. In January 2020, I officially started my business DJAYMEDIA LLC. My business specializes in creating captivating short form video content for small businesses, creatives, and organizations. I also offer event videography for birthday parties, weddings, and more. I believe my quick turn around time for final videos and my positive attitude sets me apart from other videography businesses. My main goal is for the client’s vision to be executed and be 100% satisfied with the results.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
Discussing the client’s vision, then reading or hearing the excitement about how well I brought their vision to life is rewarding. Also, getting return clients is rewarding because it shows that they trust me with their projects and I get to build a rapport with them.
What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
Referrals from friends and family, being approached during video shoots and instagram has been the best source of getting new clients.
