We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Donielle Richmond . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Donielle below.
Alright, Donielle thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I have always known that dance was my purpose. I began dancing at the age of 3 and loved it immediately. I faced resistance from family, friends and societal ignorance in regards to what life as a working dancer would look like. But I credit an unshakable belief in my dream combined with a spoonful of stubbornness. When people doubt me, it motivates me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I dove into the professional dance industry immediately after leaving high school while simultaneously pursuing my BFA in dance performance. After working in the industry in many facets, I became interested in teaching young artists necessary skills to build their own careers in a conference type setting. Activate Your Artistry was a product of that idea. I did not have a business background so studying up on different business models, seeking out literature about successful entrepreneurs and having a clear vision were necessary.
I am most proud of keeping my business afloat these last five years as a new business and through the pandemic. Operating an event based business when people were not gathering was quite the hurdle but I am so proud of simply existing.
I would love potential clients to know that Activate Your Artistry is founded on pillars of inclusion, diversity and the pursuit of developing strong dance artists. There is a place for dancers of all levels and backgrounds at our events. Everyone is welcome!
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish their was a network of dance convention owners where new business owners could seek mentorship. There were no resources available to me when questions arose and no books to read on my specific corner of the industry and there still isn’t.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding part of being a working dance artist is the fact that my passion, my work and my therapy all come from the same source. I feel so blessed to be able to use my gifts and abilities to sustain my lifestyle.
