We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Doni Blu Chuta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Doni Blu thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
After 6 years in development, Chuta & Doni Blu (SlowBurnCrew) coined the term Spliff-Hop to describe their unique approach to Hip-Hop. Grabbing a little flavor from different genres rolling it up into one song, and giving you a different high. With songs surrounding the idea of living life fast; drugs, sex, expensive habits & chasing checks with the balance of taking every moment slow; peace, love, harmony & euphoria. S.B.C. brings a versatility that makes it difficult to be put in a box.
With influences from Kanye West, DJ Quik, Bone Thugs, to more recent artists like Smino, Isaiah Rashad & EARTHGANG; The two artist share their sound from the Central Valley of California. Here on SlowBurnCrew, you’ll find collaboration projects between Doni Blu & Chuta as well as with other artists and solo projects between the members of the group.
“Our goal is to remain authentic creating the music we love without worrying about anyone’s opinion” – Chuta & Doni Blu
Doni Blu, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“We started creating music in late 2014”, Chuta is Doni’s older cousin and they went to the same high school together, after school Doni would go to Chuta’s apartment where he would put him on to 90’s Rap like Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Tribe Called Quest, DJ Quik, Bone Thugs n Harmony, & many more. After finding this new love for Rap & hip-hop Doni became interested to learn how to sample and produce beats inspired by that era, His first beat machine was an Akai MPD 218 which came with a free trial of Ableton Live, which is what they use to produce mix & master to this day. After a few weeks of learning how to create he asked Chuta to start rapping on those beats, and they’ve been creating music together ever since.
Fast forward to 2021, Doni begins to start writing and rapping, & Chuta’s production becomes more prominent in their discography, now both members are producing, writing, and performing on each track they create.
Their last project “The Low End” is a great staple in the journey as that is when you start to hear their sound become more refined.
“We’re excited to release “The Lower End”, The sequel to ‘The Low End ‘, In the coming weeks because it’s the beginning of us showing the world our growth not just in the artistry but in our personalities.”
The years of building a connection and bond through the creation of music & the ability to collaborate with other local artists so effortlessly are what makes SlowBurnCrew special.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
We think that our ability to create with other artists and our consistency in our content through social media, Live shows, to even hosting our own events is what gave us the growing reputation we have today.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Although our audience is still growing we believe that the best way to gain fans, & supporters online are to gain them in real life through live shows, most of our audience on social media was earned by proving ourselves to the people by giving them the best show possible & all the local artists share and support one another we as a collective are trying to create an ecosystem where everyone can benefit as a whole.
