We were lucky to catch up with Doneta Dawson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Doneta thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
As an artist I recorded my first project in 2011 and released that project in 2013. I had a concept and wrote organically as inspired. I recorded songs in the studio and put the project together. After releasing my first project and learning about the music industry I decided to become an independent artist and learned about distribution and more. I found a distributor, had my release party and got the support and push from friends that inspired me to launch my first business and build from there. My current business houses that project now and many others as well.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Sure! My name is Doneta pronounced “Dah-nee-tah” and I am a wife, mother, singer/songwriter, author, and minister. Pure Heart Media is a business that houses music, books, and apparel for Doneta Dawson. Pure Heart Media’s motto is “Changing the World through Worship”.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
One of the greatest lessons learned in business is about chasing people. I have learned over the years to not let selfish ambition throw it’s hat in the ring when trying to build a business. I learned this as well for me personally with a platform to sing and minister. Comparison is the theif of joy. I stopped chasing people and started chasing purpose and the difference between my business now and then is worlds apart. Researching and learning who your target audience is and catering to that dynamic will guide who you connect to. I now have meaningful relationships and a greater understanding of the inner workings of what I do.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Running a business and realizing that my cash flow just wasn’t bringing in enough to take care of daily necessities and having to go back into the workforce and manage the business in the after hours was a major pivot.
I felt like a failure, but when you are at a place and can’t risk being homeless to thrive you have to make decisions to help you mentally and emotionally run your business. This does not make you less of an entrepreneur but it does make you wiser in how to expense and budget moving forward.
