Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Donelric Owens. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Donelric, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Naming anything – including a business – is so hard. Right? What’s the story behind how you came up with the name of your brand?
Well it all started with trying to name my business after my dad. However, I was not very witty coming up with creative names, that is until I started using my middle name. “DemetrImagery” (its Demetrius for short) came in to fruition by just simply putting Demetri and imagery together. It was actually either that name or “DemeTripod”. I talked to other photographers to ask which one sounds better, and of course they said DemetrImagery sounded better.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I got into the business of photography during graduate school, where I was at the time processing my skills based on environment, learning about other photographers, and learning from my friends who are also professional photographers. The creative works I’ve provided were mostly cosplay portraits. I’ve been getting more serious with establishing from brand to business the moment after I graduated and started working in a portrait studio. I left that job about 2 years ago, because of how fast paced it was. However, I learned how to set prices exactly how a professional studio would. My intent is making sure that I would tailor the clients needs to what their theme of the session at my very best. Most importantly, I learned how to take my time with clients and being patient with them. I am mostly proud of the fact that my clients are satisfied with their images.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
For some that may not know, I also shoot street photography. I use that as a method to tell a story of my neighborhood, my childhood and my upbringing. I had to unlearn bridging all together my portrait photography and my street photography together on social media because, in a nutshell it was clashing all together and it was a confusing way to market myself from a business standpoint.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There is this one book that I have implented in my business called “Never Split the Difference”. It’s written by a former international FBI hostage negotiator. In his book, he gives out free game on strategies and techniques for high-stakes negotiations. One of the best strategies that impacted my brand from that book was understanding the mindset of another in the moment and also hearing what is behind those feelings or expectations so you increase your influence in all the moments that follow.
