We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dondra Womack. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dondra below.
Dondra, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Taking care of customers isn’t just good business – it is often one of the main reasons folks went into business in the first place. So, we’d love to get a conversation going around how to best help clients feel appreciated – maybe you can share something you’ve done or seen someone do that’s been really effective at helping a customer feel valued?
Customer service is the key to a successful business. If your customers are truly satisfied and feel appreciated, they will return and refer your business to others. HSG Healthy Hair prides itself on customer service from the moment a client books an appointment. The booking process is very simple and detailed information is available on our website. We offer quick and seamless contact via phone, email, or text. When a client walks in the door, they are properly greeted with a smile and offered a complimentary beverage and snack. Each appointment starts with a consultation to review the services that will be performed and address any concerns the client may have about their hair. The client is treated with respect and made comfortable during the duration of their appointment. HSG takes the time to listen to clients by soliciting feedback through surveys and reviews and always keeping the communication open. Clients are rewarded with birthday coupons, monthly promotions, and referral discounts.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I was born and raised in Dallas, Texas and developed the love of hair at a young age. In 2004, I graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Management from Prairie View A&M University with the hopes of owning my own salon one day. I then went on to beauty school at Tint School of Makeup and Cosmetology where I gained my cosmetology license and also worked as a teacher in a public school. In 2018, I earned a Master’s of Education from Ashford University while continuing to work as a teacher and stylist. My fondness of education and hair led me to take the path of becoming a licensed cosmetology instructor and later on an Advanced Hair Loss Specialist. In 2020, I started my own business, Hair Sew Gorgeous, which offers medical grade wigs, hair extensions, and products. After seeing so many hair and scalp problems behind the chair, I then became a certified Trichologist to help clients understand the health of their hair and create solutions that work. Through this experience I have been able to help clients improve scalp conditions and see major hair growth.
In 2022, I launched HSG Healthy Hair, to perform salon services under a professional name that would categorize the services I offered. I offer a large range of services and treatments such as a Microscopic Scalp Analysis, Body Compass Scanning, Blood Chemistry Analysis, Low Level Laser Therapy, Hair & Scalp Hydration, Scalp Detox, Electro-Therapy, Oxygen Scalp Therapy, Collagen Induced Therapy, Nutritional/Supplemental Therapy, and more. In 2023, I opened HSG Healthy Hair Studios, a full service salon that offers suites to other salon professionals. What started as a vision for HSG Healthy Hair opened the door of possibilities for others. I am most proud that I can offer salon suites to a team of professionals who will take pride in the integrity of your hair, nails, and skin. It is pure satisfaction to know that each client has left well educated out of the chair and is completely satisfied with their service.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The success of a business is determined by the ability to continually earn a profit. Every business owner wants to succeed and earn a profit. When starting HSG Healthy Hair, I decided I would be my own financial bookkeeper. I started the first couple of months with balancing my books well, but then slowly digressed. In my mind, I knew I had tenants and I was earning some money. Months later, I opened my books to play catch up and realized I couldn’t afford to pay myself. I immediately realized I needed to pivot because I did not want to be that business owner that failed in the first year. I prioritized my bookkeeping and created new marketing strategies to draw more tenants and gain new clientele.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
There is always a time in your life when you will get a “no” and sometimes that’s hard to cope with. There were different times that I heard, “I don’t want to buy your product. I don’t need your services. You’re not ready. I can’t help you.” Through it all, I stayed optimistic and blocked out negative thoughts. I learned that “no” is a part of life and you have the ability to turn that “no” into a “yes”. I’m happy that I defeated the odds and stayed focused on my goal because I wouldn’t be where I am today without a “no”.
