Alright, Donald & Rachael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Too often the media represents innovation as something magical that only high-flying tech billionaires and upstarts engage in – but the truth is almost every business owner has to regularly innovate in small and big ways in order for their businesses to survive and thrive. Can you share a story that highlights something innovative you’ve done over the course of your career?
Being able to illustrate has paved its own path for us in business. Many companies like to show they have a fun and lighter side to them and be more inviting to incoming clientele. Creating comic strips for them has been an extremely fun innovative practice that I originally did for locks and giggles on my own Instagram page but companies saw this and wanted to have some of their own. This was a snowball effect that eventually led to expansion of drawing for companies like Target, Proudly, Black Girl Sunscreen, and even some local businesses.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
DR Designing started simply as a husband pursuing his passion of illustration through different forms media including children’s books, funny comic strips and social media marketing. After some time,, we were combining our skills of drawing and illustration with arts and crafts to help people create. This creation allowed clients to create T-Shirts of their own style to home decor they could connect to. DR Designing encompasses Don’s Doodles to add melanated characters to children’s literature where they can see themselves in fun, positive, uplifting reading. Inspired by their children, they wanted them to see more of themselves as they learned to read to continue to be inspired daily. With nearly 15 books illustrated, DR Designing continues to be a hand in adding more children of color to literature for kids to be proud of.
How did you build your audience on social media?
As we all know, there isn’t one winning formula for growing an audience on social media, but I believe consistency is key to a lot of those other formulas. Showcasing art weekly whether through posts or stories on Instagram was the initial push to grow the audience. After implementing funny comic strips about the life of a married couple and their two children, people really connected with it and wanted to see more!
So with that said, one of those keys along with consistency is to be relatable.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative would be to see your clients enjoying the finished work. So many people come to us with just ideas, and then when we make it tangible, and we can see their eyes light up, it’s amazing. Often customers will start off with stock figures of drawings to get their point across but to see it come to fruition, their in awe. That’s why the name of our business, DR Designing, stands for our kids and ours initials, but also stands for DREAMS to REALITY.
