We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Don Soulo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Don, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve been an hip hop artist for over a decade. My pursuit of music began at the early age of 16 amongst peers in high school.
Don, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I go by the name of Don Soulo. Born and raised in San Diego, California. A friend of mine who is also an artist introduced me to relatives who were heavily involved in music. They brought me in at some point in my freshman year of high school and ever since then I knew hip hop was my calling. Though I don’t necessarily view myself as competitive against other artists throughout the city I grew up listening to a wide variety of artists such as busta rhymes, Eminem , petey pablo and many more. I took what I liked from these artist and molded a style of my own. I believe my music can vary from subconscious rap to commercial hits. I’d say I’m proud that I’m able to pursue my career independently and pushing my brand slayboi ent. I’ve overcome a lot of adversity throughout my life such as a divorce and my father passing but instead of letting these trials overcome me I let them fuel me as motivation. My goal is to gain more followers and hope to jumpstart my label and bring other artists in who value versatility and the overall love of music.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout my 20s I was tied down to a marriage where music wasn’t a priority. I lacked a true support system. I was involved in a car accident that should have ended my life on top of losing my father to a battle with cancer. These circumstances taught me to become a man and not let anything stop me from accomplishing my goals.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Being able to see people from around the globe view my content and actually listen. Thanks to social media I believe it’s an easier outlet to reach different generations of the public and also artists to connect with.
