Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Don Morrison. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Don, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
There are lots of times when I think to myself, man wouldn’t it be great to work a 9 – 5 job and have benefits like health insurance and paid time off. And wouldn’t it be great to not have to think about work on the weekends. But then I remember, I don’t have to answer to a boss, I can pick and choose the clients I work for, if I don’t feel a client will be a good fit for me then I can just tell them that.
The other great thing is during the event and after the event, seeing how happy the client and their guests are, is a huge part of what makes doing our job enjoyable. Knowing that we brought happiness and joy to someone’s special day is a giant thing. I would say most people remember the DJ from their wedding 10 and even 20 years later, because the entertainment is such a huge part of the event.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I grew up in a really small town in the mid 1980’s. My graduating class was 26 kids. I had the nicest stereo and the most 45’s and cassette singles so I would bring my equipment and music in and DJ our dances. Sometimes I would get paid $25 to $50 and I would use that money to buy more music. After highschool I went into the Marine Corp and when I came home from that, one of my first jobs was as a bouncer at a night club. When I wasn’t working I was hanging out there at the DJ booth and learning from the DJ, when ever he needed a break he would ask me to run it for him. From their I DJ’d off and on as side gigs until I meet my wife in 2009. When we started dating she was working part time for a karaoke company, when that company decided to move to Nashville we thought it would be great opportunity for us to start our own company which we did in 2012. It took 7 years to build the company up to where I could quit my day job and focus on DJ’ing full time. Now 12 years later we have one of the most recognized and successful DJ entertainment companies in our market, which not only employees me full time, but 2 of my kids part time and my wife part time.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish we would have had a business mentor when we started our business to help us navigate the SBA and other avenues of business financing. If we would have, we would have been able to grow our business a lot faster. The only advantage we have to not using financing to grow our business right from the start is that our business is debt free.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part for me is being a part of one of the biggest most important days of someone’s life. We provide DJ on average 50 weddings a year, and being a part of someone’s wedding and sharing in their joy and happiness is extremely rewarding and gratifying.
