Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Don Gillmer. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Don, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.

I had a show scheduled at a local hotel and due to sickness my other band members were not going to make it at the last minute. Not wanting to lose my contract, I scrambled and called some performers I knew and one I had just met. We got to the show in time to come up with enough songs we knew in common, and managed to have a great night. The establishment and crowd were all asking when our next show would be. This successful night got me thinking about the possibility of a roster of musicians that I could call upon to perform at different types of shows on a needed basis. Almost like a baseball team who is not normally from here, an Away Team. From there the idea has grown into a roster of 17 rotating performers as of today.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We as Away Team strive to bring a high energy show to each and every stage we perform upon. We focus on using top of the line equipment, production and work hard to provide a stress free booking process. We are tooled differently so that we can provide you a customized solution to your entertainment needs. Male and female lead vocals with multiple guitarists, keys and horns as requested. If you want it we can probably provide it. Live band to DJ music with some live music sets going for 3 hours straight, with no breaks and downtime to keep your dance floor full of energy.

We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.

Jose Ortiz is one of our lead vocalists and it was he who I contacted the first night when I needed a lineup quickly. His band and my current band at the time met when we were double booked at the same venue. We ended up working together that night to both perform and became friends. The rest is Away Team history.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?

I believe we do some things just a little better than our competition. We focus on selecting the right music, and working hard while on stage to be engaging, entertaining and captivating to our audience. We do all of our own design work, merchandise development, and website creation. I believe this gives us more control over our brand than most performers. After all of that is said is done it is really all about the show you bring while on stage. More often than not we will perform three plus hours straight without a break to keep the crowd energized. This along with some medleys and mashups we have created has given us a reputation that keeps people wanting to come back to see us.
