We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Don Garrett. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Don below.
Don, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’m originally from Virginia. Back in 2015 I attended a Memorial Day gathering at the home of my friends Lena & Jon. I had everyone at the gathering cracking up. All of my friends, at the gathering, encouraged me to pursue standup comedy. I figured they were just being nice. Needless to say, I didn’t take heed to their words. I move to Charlotte, NC later in the year. I was working as a Claims Adjuster upon moving to Charlotte. I would make my coworkers laugh and they said I needed to pursue standup comedy. I finally took heed upon hearing 2 different groups of people tell me the exact same thing. It’s the best decision I’ve ever made.

Don, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m comedian Don Garrett. I’m originally from Virginia. I now reside in the “Queen City” otherwise known as Charlotte, NC. I got into stand-up comedy because I had friends and coworkers both encourage me to pursue it. I’m in the business of providing smiles and happiness. During my performances, it’s my goal to make someone forget about whatever is plaguing them. I think that’s what sets me apart from others. Life can be traumatic sometimes. I love to help people escape that for just a little while. I’m most proud of my relationships with my peers and mentors. It’s a mutual respect on many levels. That respect is built on professionalism, admiration, hard work, and determination. I’d like for everyone to know that I do comedy for the people. Nothing excites me more than performing and interacting with audience members.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
Yes! I wish I knew how instrumental social media can be in the success of an artist. Social media is an extremely powerful tool that connects the entire world. For a comedian like myself, this is where we build our audiences and following. It’s absolutely necessary to have a social media presence as a comedian.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Most non-creatives don’t understand the amount of time creatives have to dedicate to their craft. The old mantra says “People make time for what they want.” That’s very true. Creatives want to achieve their dreams. It’s why we’re in our respective crafts. Of course time a bulk of time is spent on chasing the dream. The problem is sometimes non-creatives will see that as a threat. Especially, if they’re involved in a friendship or relationship with a creative. They see it as less time that can be allocated to them. I’d ask all non-creatives to be patient with creatives. We have an extreme focus on achieving our dreams.
