We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Domonique Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Domonique, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe to be successful in anything you do in this life you have to be driven in purpose. Purpose fuels your drive and ultimately it takes perseverance and consistency to be successful. I’ve learned that you can want to be successful all day, but in order to manifest that success you have to believe in yourself and your calling. I knew early on that I had a calling to work with dogs but also to use my voice to move people. Before I knew it I was hosting my own Podcast show and operating my own Dog Daycare.
Domonique, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Domonique Miller and I am the Owner/Operator of Domo’z Doggy Daycare llc and Host of the IKnowDomoKnows Podcast. I have always had an overwhelming passion to work with dogs. Three years ago I decided to take that passion and do something about it. What followed was me taking a leap of faith into the Pet Industry. This Industry is vast and for a Black Gay Woman, I knew that I would have to work twice as hard to get my business noticed. I started from the ground up, but my will power pushed me to deliver the best services to all my dog clients. My motto for my dog business is “To Treat Every Dog as If They were My Own Child”. Today my Doggy Daycare offers Premium Dog walks, Personal Dog Sittings, Boarding and even Basic Training! I am proud of the milestones I have reached and look forward to expanding and growing my clientele. The IKnowDomoKnows Podcast is where my Content Creator skills come into play. I have Hosted this podcast for the past four years. My podcast consists of Vlogs, Interviews and Open Dialogue. I cover a range of topics including current events, unpopular opinions, music, and even conspiracy theories. I like to consider my podcast an outlet for me to express myself artistically, but also a way for me to reach people in my community. As a Black woman I feel Black and Brown people don’t have enough safe spaces in this world. My hope is that my podcast can not only be a safe space, but an escape from a world that loves to silence us. My podcast streams every other Friday on all Podcast Platforms.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
Recently I took some time to reflect on the direction I was moving in with my Dog Business. I realized that money is great, but it shouldn’t be your main motive. When you are doing something you love, you have to put the love and passion into it first. I had to unlearn this owning a business was all about money for your future and your kids future. Don’t get me wrong, you want to leave something for your kids and their kids, but that starts with a mindset. I want to leave behind a legacy of strong willed individuals not money driven people. Money comes and goes, but what stays is your drive and you willingness to work toward your dreams and make them happen.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think what has helped me build a strong reputation in the Pet Industry here in Atlanta is my natural ability to connect with each dog and their owners. I have gained a reputation of being reliable and super personable. I treat each one of my client’s dogs as if they were my own. I have built a foundation of love and loyalty that I think gets overshadowed these days. I know I have done my job when not only dogs are satisfied, but their owners feel a sense of comfort with me around their fur babies.
