Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Domonique Baez. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Domonique thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Taking the risk of dropping out of College & pursuing a Cosmetology License was one of the biggest risks I have ever taken! It’s probably one of my most life changing decisions I’ve made for myself and has led me to owning my business.
At the time I was in my first semester at community college going for Psychology my parents had encouraged me to take this route since it was the safest for my future. I knew since I was young I always wanted to do something creative and not have a “regular” job.
After I finished my first semester of college I started researching Cosmetology schools in the area. Shortly after doing my research I brought my plans to me parents & let them know this is what I wanted to do. They eventually got on board with idea!
Taking that risk & leaving college to pursue my dreams is what eventually led me to my biggest risk of all – starting my own business and man am I so grateful I did!
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.

We’d love to hear the story of how you turned a side-hustle into a something much bigger.
After getting my license for cosmetology I assisted in a salon for a little while but new instantly the salon life wasn’t for me. I then worked at a spa, a waxing salon and was really just trying to find my niche.
Eventually I ended up doing admin work for a company and worked there full time. I knew it wasn’t my dream job but I had to pay the bills.
Well working there a friend reached out to me saying she was joining a bridal company and they were looking for hairstylist. I instantly said no because I was sooo scared of potentially messing up someone’s biggest day of their life and the thought alone was enough for me to turn down the opportunity, After my friend encouraged me several times to just reach out, I did! I ended up working for that company and immediately new this is what I wanted to do. I loved every aspect of it and truly enjoyed making other women feel and look their best!
After gaining the knowledge and experience from working with many other artist and companies I knew I wanted to start my own business and pursue this little side hustle as my full time,
Fast forward – the admin job I was working at laid me and a few others off. It was unexpected & at that time devastating but it was then I decided to pursue my Business full time. Ever since then I never looked back & realized being laid off was a blessing in disguise & gave me the push to go from side hustle to full time business owner!
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I’ve had to unlearn is – to not to have a scarcity mindset.
I think for a majority of women growing up were conditioned to watch our backs when were alone, to always be on guard, to not take risks, at least for me that was my experience. Of course our loved ones whos raised us had the right intentions in instilling this mindset into us but what I found is that kind of mindset will paralyze you in life and in your business.
And what I mean by that is – fear of making the wrong decision in your business or fear of your work being judged on social media or fear of you being judged for putting yourself out their, that fear that you may not be good enough or your work isn’t. That kind of mindset – that scarcity keeps you from never growing, it keeps you from actually pursuing the desires you have, it keeps you small as well as your business.
How I am unlearning this way of thinking is life coaching, journaling, listening to podcasts & reading books about this way of thinking & how not to live in that fear anymore. I’m learning to be aware of myself and the reasoning behind the decisions I make in life & in my business .
