What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career? Maybe you can share a story (or stories) that illustrate the things they did right and the impact they had on you and your journey
My parents provided such a safe space for be growing up that I often times feel like I can overcome and take control of the world. Growing up I lived by the saying, “If my parents don’t kill me for it, I don’t care what anyone else thinks.” Because I wasn’t afraid of my parents, there wasn’t much I would be ashamed for, so the world became my oyster. One thing that always sticks out to me was that my mom would always ask us about what was happening if we got in trouble, broke something, or anything. She would always tell us, “If you did it, don’t lie. You will receive a consequence if you did it but it will be worst if you lie and I find out you lied.” And she always stuck to her word. Once I broke a glass out of her China cabinet and she asked if I did it. Those words rang out and I told her the truth. I got a punishment because I was playing where I shouldn’t have been, but that was my consequence. I never really lied to her after that. And so I’m very genuine and honest with others.
My father always told me I was beautiful. He would always compliement my smile and to know my father, if it was a lie he wouldn’t say it. This gave me the confidence that so many people compliment me for today. My father also made it a point to take us on a trip at least once a year and he worked any side job to make it happen. This sparked my love for experiences. With my parents continued support, truthfullness and instilled confidence, I embarked on everything new that I could think of. This is where I stumbled upon yoga. And I’ve been connected since.
Domoneicqua, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Domoneicqua, and I come from a small town called Kingstree, SC. Until my junior year in college I never flew on a plane or traveled solo. I never even ventured off of the east coast. But I took my first flight to Texas to be a summer camp counselor and my life hasn’t been the same since. This opened my eyes to new experiences and I wanted to experience everything. I tried so many things from Zumba to run clubs to dance groups but nothing fulfilled me like yoga. But it wasn’t always something I loved. In fact, I walked out of the middle of my first yoga class. I couldn’t touch my toes, I couldn’t do a warrior pose. I felt completely out of place but years later when I moved to Texas I tried it again and fell in love. But that wasn’t what got me into teaching yoga. I practiced for years but when I moved to China, I experienced culture shock. I needed something to help me connect to myself as I felt vastly disconnected from the society I implanted myself in. That’s when I began to have a deeper practice with yoga. When covid hit and I was forced to move back to America, pratically fleeing, I decided to take a 200 hour yoga teacher training. I just wanted to learn more for myself. I saw how people looked in the industry and I was not the type. But when I did my training project where I had to teach, I never felt something so powerful. The feeling I got when I did yoga was being shared with others and like my friend would say, this was the first thing outside of my college career that I stuck with. Now I teach yoga so that everyone can experience the benefits. I am fulfilled when I share my practice with others and I finely understand what it feels like to have a purpose.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
I’m going to sound arrogant here. Other than training or knowledge, what I think makes me most successful is my genuine persona. I can go into any room and I don’t aim to place myself above others or demand attention that is not naturally given to me. I don’t know how to be anyone but myself. There’s a welcoming, nonjudgemental presence that I carry with me. This may sound arrogant but I’m just repeating how others have described me. This makes others believe in themselves as well. I didn’t really understand this until I started my practice with yoga. I’ve had strangers randomly compliment my energy and I’ve always been told this from even my colleagues. So when I step on my mat, I am genuinely there to share in a practice with others. I’m not above them or beneath them. I have met so many people who compliment me on my confidence and ability to live life on the edge and I can never tell them why I’m this way. So, I decided to just live my truth and document it. I want everyone to experience a unity within themselves and their higher power. This is what makes me who I am and yoga helped me learn that. My passion for others to live a fulfilling life despite societal pressures by living unapologetically me, is what makes me successful.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I honestly think being a plus size, black woman in America living out loud despite the negative stereotypes, helped me to build my reputation in my market. I show my journey so others know it’s possible for them as well. People want to feel like they can do anything and I’m here telling them it’s possible. I’m showing myself it’s possible. I also read a book by Cathy Heller, entitled, ‘Don’t Keep Your Day Job’ The book talked about not waiting until it’s perfect to start. Everyone is flawed and people want to know it’s okay to be flawed. Me showing my flaws made them feel comfortable showing theirs. That is what helped me build my reputation in my market.
