We recently connected with Dominque Morgan and have shared our conversation below.

Dominque, appreciate you joining us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?

My parents Mr. & Mrs. Donantonio Urrutia have done countless things right throughout my lifetime that have impacted my life in a positive manner. As High School sweethearts they went on to get married 49 years ago. I will be forever grateful for the example that they set for me. They worked tirelessly to provide for my brother and I. Financially, physically, emotionally and spiritually our needs were met. My Mother nurtured me and taught me how to be God a fearing woman with self-confidence. While my Father led by example as a Man, entrapuner, attended PTA meetings, every attended every sporting event I cheered at. We wanted for nothing. I earned an award for perfect attendance Grades K-12. I was taught the importance of being present at an early age.

My parents prepared me for days that I would have to face mistreatment. I will gladly stand up for myself in a firm yet professional manner.

The work ethic I have, morals, values, integrity, and desire to inspire others; is because of my parents. Because of them I dare to dream, I take risk and I am a go getter. I often give expecting nothing nor accolades in return. Thank you Mom & Dad.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your background and context?

My name is Dominque Morgan and I am the owner of Yard Card Queen Harrisburg. This business came to be because of Covid-19. My husband Anthony’s 50th Birthday destination celebration had to be canceled. I planned a smaller scale Jamacian themed Paint/Pool Party for him at home. Shortly after I began to research Yard Cards. I met with Sarah via phone and decided to along with my husband’s support start Yard Card Queen Harrisburg.

Together we strive to create unique original Yard Card Greetings. We attempt to create Greetings that the recipient can relate to and appreciate. Not just place a few stars, balloons and a message.

Our style of Yard Card Greetings has set us apart from others. We are most proud of earning an award from Harrisburg Magazine’s Simple The Best Reader’s Choice Birthday Party Services 2 years in a row!!! We just celebrated our 2nd Yardcardiversary in August!!

We provide a Yard Card Greeting rental service. Reservation requests are made online at www.yardcardqueen.com .

We’d really appreciate if you could talk to us about how you figured out the manufacturing process.

Our inventory is not manufactured locally. We have invested well over $20,000 in inventory. We strive to create unique and original displays. This is why it is important to place orders in a timely manner. Graphic designers need time create designs and get approval from Tony or I and shipping has been slower than it was 2 years ago. We work with a handful of designers. Loyalty is important to me as is customer service.

Memorial Greetings are slightly different. The turnaround is slightly faster and it is typically a keepsake photo that is ordered.

I’ve learned that as hard as we try; we still can’t please everyone. We make things look easy, however weather, SOD, new homes, older yards, tree roots, flower beds all play a part in staking a yard.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?

Resilience is an amazing skill that one can posess that will ultimately help you recover quickly from difficulties. Challenges will come, staff will leave and you business must still function. If you are resilient, you have an innate ability to keep getting up when life knocks you down. You’ll learn how to bounce back and keep going.

Yard Card Greetings are designed to celebrate whatever your heart desires. I was not prepared to create a Memorial Greeting. I had to first accept the fact that a child had been murdered. A child that I worked with, nurtured and witnessed grow throughout the years….gone. With approval from his mother I ordered and received everything prior to his Funeral service. I prepped his Greeting as tears fell. That evening I installed his Yard Card Greeting. It remained up until his Mother was ready for it to be removed.

A learning experience to say the least. It was the first of several Memorial Greetings. We have since added Heavenly Birthday Greetings. We have also added Cemetery Greetings. We have learned that Yard Card Greetings are therapeutic for some people. It truly is about meeting the needs of our customers. I never anticipated visiting cemeteries at dusk; however with my husband alongside of me I consider it an honor now to do so. We have gained awesome customers that return often for Greetings and give referrals.  We consider ourselves blessed and we are truly grateful.
