We were lucky to catch up with Dominque Morgan recently and have shared our conversation below.
Dominque , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
I have never entered any business venture alone. Team Morgan is not just a statement for The Morgan’s. I’ve had my husband Anthony’s unwavering support from day one. He always has my back just as I have his. Not just with this business but all of our businesses. Many people don’t understand the dedication and hard work it takes to start and maintain a successful business. We are often approached by people and expected to be pay people under the table…..not quite. We run things decent and in order. Applications, W9’s and our accountant handles their portion. As a result sometimes that means it’s just Anthony & I and that’s okay. We have never missed a yard. We may have missed a little sleep here or there, or an event however the outcome in the end was worth it. Some people say they can never work with their spouse, we are the complete opposite. We wouldn’t have it any other way, we don’t mind working together. People often say all we do is work… it keeps us focused on us and producing fruits of our labor. We’ve learned to be mindful when hiring in the future…..very mindful.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
Yard Card Queen Harrisburg provides a plethora of Yard Card Greetings for whatever event we are contacted for if time permits. This is one of 3 businesses that we own in addition to my full time career as a Therapist and I am also an active member in my Sorority Alpha Kappa Sorority Incorporated. Anthony’s 50th Birthday plans were altered due to Covid-19. I reached out to Sarah and YCQ Harrisburg immediately hit the ground running. We developed a unique style of our own. Invested in enough inventory to go from accommodating 2 customers on 1 night to 10-12 on 1 night. Our Mother’s Cynthia and Wendy began to help us. Ms. Savanah did and still does help us when needed.
Our goal is to make the recipient feel special, loved and appreciated. If it is a memorial our goal is to celebrate their life. Our biggest hurdle has been weather. Strong winds, most customers are understanding. We have booked less according to weather forecast which was helpful this season. We aim to please. I believe our work sets us apart simply by our style which has been mimicked so we are constantly changing.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Our advertisement signs that are placed along side each greeting and word of mouth have been our best sources for new clients. Some of our biggest supporters have been complete strangers and we are grateful. Something as simple as liking our business page or sharing our post goes a long way also. The support that we’ve received is appreciated from each and every one of you.

Can you tell us the story behind how you met your business partner?
I went have a business meeting roughly 10 years ago. Afterwards I met with my sister Marian to have breakfast. The entire time I noticed a gentleman staring at our table, my Sister was already married so I asked her if she knew who the gentleman was. She responded “yes Tony Morgan he’s been checking you out the entire time” ” don’t you know him?”. My response was “no”. From that day on he made it his business to intentionally run into me. I invited Anthony to my birthday party, he attended and we began dating a few months later. We’ve had 5 businesses together. We got engaged in March of 2018 and married in September of 2018.
