We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominique, thanks for joining us today. What sort of legacy are you hoping to build. What do you think people will say about you after you are gone, what do you hope to be remembered for?
When I think of legacy I think of something that will last long after I am gone and something that I can leave to my own children. My vision is to move, encourage, and inspire people to live a healthier life. I want my legacy to help people realize that health and fitness is not one size fits all. It is a lifestyle, but more importantly, a lifestyle that works for you.
After I am gone, I want people to say that I was a light to this world. My prayer is that when they see me or interact with me, they see God’s light because without Him I am nothing. Whether big or small, I want people to be inspired through my actions to make small but lasting changes to take better care of themselves. Your health should be a priority because, without it, you can’t accomplish anything else.
I hope to be remembered for my passion for health, fitness, and wellness as well as being unapologetically me.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Where do I begin? My name is Dominique Thomas and first and foremost I am a child of God and a mother to my 3 beautiful children. I am also a nationally certified personal trainer, nationally certified nutrition coach, wellness coach, two-time author, motivational speaker, and owner of Well & Fit Coaching, LLC.
My passion for movement happened at a very young age. I can remember wanting to be a professional track and field runner with hopes of running in the Olympics one day. Looking back, I can remember being filled with so much joy in movement. Whether it was running, dancing, martial arts, or even playing outside with my friends, the longing to move my body was always there. I was blessed to be able to run track and field from the age of 4 all the way through college.
Upon graduating from California State University, Fullerton, I knew I wanted a career in health and fitness promotion. Personal training just seemed like the right fit for me. I have worked for private and public companies in the past, and what was always missing was the care for the “whole man/woman.” This birth my company, Well & Fit Coaching. I was determined to help my clients from the inside out. I always say, “If you are looking just to lose weight, then I am not the personal trainer for you.” My goal is to get you to look at this journey as a lifestyle and to help you begin to live with intention for the long term.
I offer 3 different packages for clients to choose from. I have a gold, silver, and bronze package. Each one is slightly different (including the frequency of our sessions) but all include nutritional guidance and of course wellness coaching. What sets me apart is not only the wellness component but my commitment to holding you accountable. It is never just a workout for me. I tie in what I like to call “wellness workouts,” and I spend time to help you conquer whatever challenges that may occur on your health and fitness journey. It is truly a collaborative effort.
Very soon I will be offering services exclusively for professionally driven women who are seeking to improve their overall wellness. During a 1 hour session, I will be using proven techniques and tailored coaching to curate an individualized plan to improve their health and help them make a lasting investment in their overall wellness. Long gone are the days when we should be working until exhaustion. It is time to make our well-being a priority.
I am most proud when a client reaches their goal or they are confident enough to continue their journey on their own because it has now become a part of their everyday lives. I help them bring their focus back to the very thing that will help them find success in any area of their lives and that is their health.
I want my audience to know that this never feels like work for me. My passion only fuels my purpose. I truly believe that this is my God-given gift, and I am grateful that He has chosen me to lead in such a way. My goal is to reach as many people as possible through my message of health, fitness, and wellness. I love what I do.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
The most effective strategy for growing my clientele has been to lead by example. As I mentioned before my vision is to move, encourage, and inspire people to live a healthier life. First, I want people to move because there is so much power in movement. It shifts rooms and attitudes in a positive way. To just start moving is the beginning step on your way to a healthier life. Secondly, want to encourage others to start and keep going. It is second nature for me to encourage others. It is my pleasure to be your motivator when somehow you cannot do it yourself. Lastly, I want to inspire people by being an example to others. I live my life in such a way that others can follow. I never give my clients something to do that I haven’t already done myself. I want to be a living example of the life I hope that one day you will lead.
We’d love to hear about how you keep in touch with clients.
I keep in touch with clients through weekly emails, text messages, and contact on social media. I am committed to my clients’ process and I always want to know how I can serve them better. Just a small comment or quick text message can help make someone’s entire day. Things like that cannot be taken for granted.
I have even taken it a step further and started my own activewear line called W+F ACTIVEWEAR, where my clients can now wear my brand. It makes my heart happy whenever we work out and they happen to be wearing another element to what I have created. My community is strong because they believe in me and I believe in them.
