We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Postell a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Well that’s a tough question. I think I would have to say my project “RECALL”. It’s meaningful to me for a lot of reasons. Mostly because it was the reemergence of me making films since I had actually lost all my film equipment in an incident. This situation actually caused a shift to have me move to another country to pursue what I was doing somewhere else. I felt like if God meant for me to continue what I was doing, there was no amount of equipment ,bad situations, or locations that could stop it from happening. After, I was able to move to South Korea and eventually meet people to come together to make ‘RECALL”. I truly think without that film I wouldn’t of been able to take what I was doing to the next level. The film was just really fun! We had a crew of about three to four people. So it was extremely small. I had a amazing with cinematographer Abdullah Essop . We just clicked on writing and getting that script together. It was really an amazing experience that eventually led to me now making the award-winning film “VIRAL”.
Dominique, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
The branding of Postman Legacy Productions LLC has kind of changed over the years. We started out as a multi-media business. Music videos , Commercials , films, advertisements , and vlogs all played a part in learning the craft. They all were services we provided over the years . Those things were always done in a film perspective because of my personal background in it. I think this always gave me and the business a different quality in the product. I always wanted to have full control over the creativity of the work being put out. What I’m proud of is that in all these experiences we have been able to produce and make our on films in house. Now we can fully have control over the narrative of the company and projects that are put out.
Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I think a lesson I had to unlearn was quantity of content, overexertion, and comparing timelines in other peoples businesses. I really would push myself in the past to come out with consistent content , but I had to realize that that style of work wasn’t for me. I ended up losing my edge on being creative. I was burnt out and started to have more work out, but the work started to look similar or even the same. So, I had to stay on the path to make quality film work and give that to the people who were consumers as well. Once I figured that out then comparing myself to other film businesses and their works became so much easier to not worry about. Sticking to what works for you will always do well for your business rather than trying to keep up with a market that is ever changing. Especially when its not always for the good.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think for me its having your work being looked at by peers and consumers of the content. People from anywhere can look at your work as a creative and interpret it in anyway they want to. That has it’s positives , but also has its negatives. I love the idea of being able to change the way people think, how they view the content you’ve created, and how from that point on they’ve got to see something new. The negatives of course is that people don’t have to like it. It can not be good to them. Even to a point where they want it canceled or even deleted. These are obviously extremes, but that’s the beauty of art. It allows people to feel many different types of ways. Some exactly what you expected and some are just completely different.
