We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique McGee a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
Well hello CanvasRebels community. Yes! One of the most exhilarating and challenging risks I have ever taken was stepping out of my comfort zone and pursuing my goals with unwavering determination. Despite facing adversity, I chose to stand up for what I believe in and establish my own survivor-led nonprofit to stand in the gap for others where no one stood for me. It required immense courage to trust in myself and my abilities, not knowing if others would support me on this journey.
Entering the anti-human trafficking movement, I was driven by a deep passion to create a better future for survivors, at-risk youth, and young adults in underserved communities. I took a leap of faith, utilizing the resources and knowledge I had at my disposal, and poured my heart and soul into this cause. The road to success was filled with uncertainties and challenges, but I was determined to persevere.
Building a business from the ground up demanded a significant financial, emotional, and mental investment. Despite the daunting nature of the task, I was willing to risk it all and push myself beyond my limits. The journey was filled with ups and downs, moments of doubt, and setbacks. However, I refused to give up, knowing that every obstacle was an opportunity for growth.
In my pursuit of my dreams in the acting and modeling industry, I faced the harsh reality of inconsistent work and the need to maintain a positive mindset amidst rejection. Despite the challenges, I remained steadfast in my determination to succeed.
Taking risks has always been a fundamental part of my journey, propelling me forward and pushing me to strive for greatness. I have learned that setbacks and risk taking is inevitable, but with perseverance and a resilient spirit, I can overcome any obstacle that comes my way.

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The key to growing clientele in any industry is understanding your target demographic. Who is your ideal client? Once you can identify this, you can build strong relationships within those communities, ensuring that you are in good standing with your clients and the communities you serve. Building relationships means meeting the demand and standing behind your services or products, addressing any questions, comments, and concerns. It also involves engaging with your clients on a deeper level to understand their wants and needs in order to provide exceptional services or products. There has to be more than just earning a profit.
By consistently delivering high-quality services or products and maintaining open lines of communication with your clients, you can establish trust and loyalty. This will not only help retain existing clients but also attract new ones through positive word-of-mouth referrals. Additionally, staying up-to-date with industry trends and continuously seeking feedback from your clients will allow you to adapt and improve your offerings to better meet their evolving needs. Ultimately, by prioritizing your clients and actively working to exceed their expectations, you can foster long-lasting relationships that will drive the growth of your clientele and business.
Furthermore, by building strong relationships with your clients, you can also gain valuable insights into their preferences and pain points. This information can be used to tailor your services or products to better address their specific needs, ultimately leading to higher customer satisfaction and loyalty. By consistently delivering exceptional customer experiences and going above and beyond to meet their expectations, you can differentiate yourself from competitors and solidify your position in the market. Ultimately, investing in client relationships is not only beneficial for retaining and attracting customers but also for driving long-term success and growth for your business.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I have an amazing story to share with you about resilience and strength during my lowest point. As a mother of three sons and engaged to the incredible Jerrod Williams, my life took a devastating turn in 2022 when my oldest son was a victim of gun violence. On that same day, I lost everything – my job, my home, everything I owned. I was unable to be by my son’s side in the hospital due to policies, and my emotional and mental well-being was pushed to its limits. My fiancé, a veteran, also lost his job, leaving us with nothing but each other.
We found ourselves in a shelter, facing a complete reset of our lives. I had a choice to make – let this situation break me or build me up. Despite the challenges, I refused to let adversity define me. I continued speaking out on various platforms about homelessness and human trafficking as a survivor leader, using my own experiences to advocate for change. I continued booking acting and modeling contracts, all while going back to school to further my education at night. at my lowest I was doing great things.
Ten months later, I graduated from school while still living in the shelter. We go out and two months after that, I founded my own organization to support those facing similar struggles. I refused to let my circumstances defeat me, choosing instead to stand tall and build a foundation of support for others in need. Today, my son has recovered, my family is thriving, and my organization stands as a beacon of hope for those in need.
I am proof that no matter how dire the situation may seem, with determination and resilience, anything is possible. If I could overcome the challenges in my life, I believe that anyone can find the strength to persevere and thrive.
Exciting news! I have an upcoming project that I can’t wait for you to see. It’s a short film called “If They Took Us Back,” set to be released on Juneteenth. In this film, I play the role of the grandmother and I must say, it was an incredible experience to work with the talented team at Fourth Industrial Pictures and the amazing writer and director, Holly Charles Pearson.
