We recently connected with Dominique Mary Davis and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you tell us about a time that your work has been misunderstood? Why do you think it happened and did any interesting insights emerge from the experience?
Being misunderstood has its pros and cons . People naturally do not and sometimes will not understand things, people, and places that are different. When you think you’re misunderstood you have to take into account that you’re basing your perception of being understood on what others can understand. Don’t do that. There are people in this world that will make it their point not to understand you for whatever limiting reason and it would be in your best interest not to give a damn. Being misunderstand just means you think outside of the box , out of the norm, not with the status quo and others just don’t understand. Be encouraged by being different. The ones who get it will get it.

Dominique, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Music has been apart of my life for all of my life so becoming a singer and songwriter is in alignment. I learned a lot about music over the years in many different facets that eventually led to me creating my own music and connecting with other artists and promoters to perform in some of the most well known venues in Detroit and for individuals as prestigious as our president. Being a singer/songwriter allows me to express myself as an artist and as an entrepreneur in my authenticity which always translates the best when working with others on projects, shows, etc. I always look forward to collaborating with other artists as music is a collection of artistic energies. Personally, I could write music all day and every day which has allowed my skills to get really good and fast but still give you a bop.
Altogether, I am so proud of me . *insert Snoop Doggs “I Want To Thank Me” acceptance speech*. No one ever really understands the work, time, effort it takes to perform and deliver yourself to others. You run the risk of literally challenging your mental health because you never have any idea how people are going to respond to you, your art, or your presentation and yet as an artist you can’t help but to be in love and to try it anyway. I am proud of the person I have become through the lessons I have learned. I am proud that I was able to bring not only myself but also others along a journey that is true to my heart.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Healing. Music heals me, I pray it heals others. I pray to the vessel that helps initiate or helps in the continuation of growth and healing.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
God has had very funny ways of showing me different lessons in life so resilience is practically my middle name but one time in particular would be when I was traveling to a show 2 hours, got into a car accident where the car flipped over twice. Completely totaled the car and had a friend pick me and still make it to the show.
