Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dominique Jerome. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dominique , appreciate you joining us today. Can you share a story with us from back when you were an intern or apprentice? Maybe it’s a story that illustrates an important lesson you learned or maybe it’s a just a story that makes you laugh (or cry)?
I want to give thanks and honor my elders and ancestors, those seen and unseen for they have paved the way for us to walk in. Throughout the years I’ve helped and supported people during their holistic journey. During that time, I’ve been able to create and gather various tools and resources that have been passed on from my African Haitian Taino tradition. Although, I am beyond grateful to help others ,the best part of this journey is coming back to self and healing myself. My journey through herbalism resurfaced when I was in high school. I was very anemic, deficiently low in vitamin D and suffered from migraines. I went on an herbal detox cleansing every system of my body organ by organ. Thereafter, I introduced myself to herbs that assist with my inaliments and migraine.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a yoga teacher, sound practitioner, reiki master, womb worker/birthworker, plant-based artist and most of all an herbalist who works heavily with botanicals to assist the mind, body and soul. I have an online store where individuals can purchase herbal preparations made by me. I also, teach different herbal workshops throughout the city and virtually. I love to talk about herbalism and the idea of taking care of your body with a preventive mindset. I hope someday, I will be in the position of creating a space where people can come create their own herbal products using the herbs in my apothecary and I am just here as a guide. Doing workshops like these allows people to have ownership in the products they make for themselves which the eventually will want to use.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Coming from a lineage of herbalist back in Ayiti (Haiti), I was always immersed in a natural pathway of healing. My first teachers were my great aunts & uncles, my grandparents and of course my father. They would make tea for me in the morning and evening before bed and would prepare herbal remedies for different seasons. People in the neighborhood would always stop by the house to get a remedy, healing touch from one of the elders in our home.
If you could go back in time, do you think you would have chosen a different profession or specialty?
I would not change being an herbalist if I could go back. If anything, I would love to immerse myself more into learning more about the agricultural approaches to preserve herbs as we navigate in a world where people are trying to access a more holistic approach.
