We recently connected with Dominique House and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dominique thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
What it takes to be successful looks different for everyone. I want to humbly declare that one person’s success could be someone else’s stepping stone.
I learned early on in my entrepreneurial journey not to measure my level of success against others in my industry, but to evaluate their triumphs and develop my own vision of success for my company. Knowing that I can grow as big as I can visualize and seeing beyond where I am right now were key factors in growing my business.
If I were to develop a blueprint for how to be successful, it would consist of the following principles:
1. Set goals (these will change over time as you reach them and set new ones for continued success).
2. Be a go-getter (ditch the mindset of ‘if you build it, they will come.’ Do everything you can to present yourself in a positive way and make meaningful business connections, as they are essential for success).
3. Learn valuable lessons from failure (conduct research, seek guidance from industry mentors, and consider professional consultants to help minimize costly mistakes).
4. Reputation management (this is probably one of the most important aspects in today’s society. Customer service, effective communication, and keeping political and personal views out of your business’s branding can really make or break you).
5. Remember that what’s meant for you is for you, and not all money and financial gain are worth the potential backlash or headaches that may come with it.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My journey into the family entertainment industry began with a passion for all things creative. Truth is at my daughter’s fourth birthday party, my husband and I were just trying to save money on entertainment. He twisted balloons and I painted the children’s faces. Family and friends quickly started to chat and said ‘hey, we’ll pay you to do this for us?’ I hadn’t really thought about doing it as a business at the time, and did like thought of doing something fun as career path. And then, miraculously, a few weeks later, I had the opportunity to buy someone’s company from them. I really wanted to be a stay at home mom, was the opportunity we needed to still make an income and be able to have more time for my kids at home.
This business owner was ready to retire, and although I couldn’t afford to give her what her company was worth, she told me she believed in me, that she knew I would do more than anyone else she spoke with about purchasing her company. She spent just one day showing me everything she knew. And the rest was up to me. She allowed me to start booking under her brand with the contingency that I would have her paid off within a year, and that’s what we did. The first two years were quite the learning experience, we are proud to say, we’ve been in business almost 9 years now, and still growing.
At Colorful Events, we take the fun part of the family entertainment business very seriously. We literally paint smiles and twist joy, helping clients create long-lasting memories one magical experience at a time, bringing their celebration visions to life again and again.
One of the key problems we solve for our clients is promoting community togetherness. When corporate and community organizations hire us to provide entertainment at their free-to-the-public events, we offer face painting and balloon twisting services that not only entertain individuals but also foster a sense of togetherness and connection within the community.
By offering these services, we aim to promote community togetherness and create inclusive spaces where everyone feels welcome and valued. We believe that by spreading joy and fostering connections, we can contribute to building stronger, more vibrant communities where people come together to celebrate and support each other.
What sets Colorful Events, LLC apart from others in the industry is our personalized approach and dedication to exceeding our clients’ expectations. We love what we do, and it shows as we beam with joy at every event. We take the time to understand each client’s unique vision and preferences, tailoring our services to create unforgettable experiences that reflect their individual style and personality.
I am incredibly proud of the professional network I have built among others in my industry and those we are compatible with. It has truly been an amazing resource to help provide better service to clients and support other businesses.
For potential clients, followers, and fans, I want them to know that at Colorful Events, LLC, we appreciate and value you! Every event is treated as though it’s for our own! “Colorful Events where colors explode and events are memorable!'”

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
Most Clients find my company on Google. But the key is good conversion rates, is utilizing SEO strategies, and presenting the value in the services we offer, based on knowledge , experience , safety, and skill set. While then fostering those relationships through constant communication there after.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
“You have to take advantage of every opportunity to achieve success!”
However, every opportunity isn’t destined for you. You must fully analyze the situation and measure the pros with the cons. Concrete, measurable data can be very helpful tools in understanding which opportunities are best suited for you and your business.
In the midst of learning this lesson, I found myself double booked, overworked, sleep deprived, anxious, and quickly approaching burnout. I couldn’t be everywhere, and I couldn’t do everything, no matter how hard I tried. And when I tried, I most certainly lacked completely in another aspect of my life.
The epiphany I gained from learning this lesson came two-fold. Firstly, to work smarter, not harder, being sure to utilize all the resources I had available to me. Secondly, I learned to focus on who my ideal client was because everybody isn’t my ideal client, as much as I liked to think it was.
By growing my business through utilizing subcontractors and partnering with compatible companies like bounce house companies, caterers, event planners, etc., we were able to do less physically, saving time and supporting other companies in the process, while providing our clients with more efficient services.
This is when my company began to grow from a one-woman show to an event services agency. We developed a standard for entertainment and only hired the best, most reputable talent. We did the same for all our other partnered vendors as well.
Sometimes, we aren’t the best fit for potential clients. While we wish to provide the best service to everyone, we are always happy to refer them to someone we believe can be of better service, whether it be that we aren’t in their budget range or we can’t meet their expectations in a realistic manner. We have learned that providing the best customer service sometimes means referring them to someone else.
