We were lucky to catch up with Dominique Cooper recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Dominique thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I believe it takes passion to become successful. Being fully passionate and believing in your craft will give you the drive to keep going, continuing to grow and challenging yourself.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in the beauty industry for almost two decades. Starting out managing salons in my teen years. That’s what sparked my passion with the industry. From there I have done many different things in this industry. Styling photo shoots, throwing pop up parties, salon education and currently I am working behind the chair doing hair at The Lab in North Park. I specialize in blonding, extensions and textured cuts.
What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
Having my first son really made me take a step back and create a laser focus on my career. Before him I had my hand in many different things. After he was born I focused on behind the chair and building a solid clientele.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I think my generation of hairstylist has had to really re brand ourselves on social media. I remember when I first started in the hair industry clients came in with magazine clippings of hairstyles they wanted. Now it’s just a Pinterest search and you have access to so many different ideas, styles and inspiration. It’s been interesting to navigate that big change. I do enjoy the social media aspect of my business. I feel like it’s helped me curate my ideal clientele. You really attract people similar to you and social media has influenced that alot.
