Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Dominique Bianco. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Dominique, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
As a young child, I immersed myself in the world of dance, attending classes five times a week and exploring various styles like Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip-Hop. It wasn’t until I timidly tried my hand at singing that I discovered my true passion. Singing came naturally to me, and I eagerly pursued it alongside my dance training. Weekly lessons helped shape my voice, and despite being initially hesitant, I joined singing programs and clubs. In middle school, I set my sights on making it into the top choir, unbothered by the competition around me. My unwavering confidence stemmed from my obsession with listening to powerhouse singers like Whitney Houston and Jennifer Hudson. High school brought new challenges as I moved to a different city and found myself starting from scratch in choirs and musicals. The solos that once came easily to me in New York City were now harder to come by, and I had to prove myself all over again.
While I had once dabbled in acting and dancing, my passion for music eclipsed everything else. I realized that my true calling was in performing and creating music. So, I made a bold decision and changed my major to Jazz studies in college. I quickly adapted to the new program and threw myself into it with unwavering determination.
Throughout my journey, I’ve faced numerous obstacles, but my confidence and genuine love for music have always propelled me forward. The stage has always called out to me, and I thrive on the energy of a captivated audience. Performing runs in my blood, influenced by my father’s own musical pursuits. Despite the changing landscape of the industry, where popularity sometimes overshadows talent, I remain steadfast in my pursuit of sharing my music and connecting with others.

Dominique, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
“Bianco transformed what many consider dusty or tired tunes into evergreen sources of wisdom and feeling. Whether in covering classic vocals, composing lyrics to well-worn tunes, or writing new compositions of her own (like “Humming Beneath the Trees,” an original single in the vein of jazz standards), Bianco’s work assures that jazz music can still matter to contemporary audiences. All it takes is the right voice to help them hear why.” – Thomas Gartman CapitalBop 2022
This is a quote that I think describes what I do very well. I am currently based in the DC area, originally from Staten Island, New York. Critics have drawn comparisons between my voice and the timeless Ella Fitzgerald, describing me as a rising talent in the jazz scene.
At the age of 21, I made my debut with the release of my record “I’m All Smiles,” featuring the incredible talents of Benny Benack III and Elijah Jamal Balbed. Since then, my music has garnered attention from respected publications such as Downbeat Magazine, Jazz Times, and several local news outlets. I’ve had the pleasure of being interviewed by Voyage Baltimore Magazine and I received the 2023 Wammie Award for “Best Jazz Artist”, I was recognized as a finalist in the prestigious International Ella Fitzgerald Vocal Competition in 2022 and currently, I am honored to be a Strathmore Artist in Residence for 2023.
I’ve had the privilege of performing at renowned venues and festivals including Blues Alley, The Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, Keystone Korner, and Smalls NYC, among others. Collaborating with esteemed jazz musicians like Julius Rodriguez, Joe Farnsworth, and Mark Whitfield has been a true highlight of my career. I’ve created a unique fusion of traditional jazz and contemporary influences, resulting in a sound that is both timeless and innovative.
When I take the stage, I strive to convey the raw emotions of each song, captivating my audience with unforgettable performances. My style is a blend of classic and fresh elements, leaving a lasting impression on those who experience my music.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
During my college years, I gradually became aware of a disheartening undercurrent of jealousy and competition in my musical environment. Looking back, I wish I had picked up on it sooner, as it would have allowed me to protect myself from the hidden agendas of others who sought to be close to me or extract information. It was a surprise to realize that many fellow vocalists approached me not out of genuine curiosity or admiration, but rather to unravel the secrets of my own personal success at the time. I was asked questions about how I secured gigs, honed my skills, explored scatting, built connections, or even about my personal clothing choices and creative pursuits like video editing and graphic design. I found myself at the receiving end of harsh words and unwarranted criticism via social media and email. It was disheartening to realize that, beyond my loving family, I faced skepticism and lack of support on my artistic journey. If I could offer advice to anyone pursuing music or any profession, it would be to surround yourself with genuinely caring individuals who have your best interests at heart. Their support and purity of intention are invaluable. In terms of resilience, many people have tried to define who I am, dictate my actions, and divert me from my path, driven by their own personal fears of my potential. It’s important not to let others dampen your inner light. Instead, seek out and surround yourself with people who ignite and amplify your brightness.

What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
Here are some of the best ways to support local artists and creatives in order to have a thriving creative ecosystem. Recognizing their impact and celebrating their work helps promote their importance in society.
The current industry relies heavily on popularity, ticket sales, and online engagement. By simply going to shows, watching live streams, sharing their work with your friends, commenting, liking, and subscribing, you can make a real difference. Talented artists often wish that raw talent alone would be enough to succeed, but in reality, they need a dedicated army of supporters to catch the attention of agencies and record labels.
Financial support is also essential for artists and creatives to pursue their craft. Governments, organizations, and communities can play a role by establishing more grants, awards, scholarships, and funding opportunities. Making affordable studio spaces, equipment, residencies, and performance opportunities accessible to artists can also have a significant impact.
Encouraging others in public participation within the arts strengthens the creative ecosystem. Creating spaces where artists can showcase their work and meet with new engaged audiences helps build a supportive and interactive community.
Lastly, help fund their artistic projects, funny enough, I’m embarking on the next chapter of my musical journey: the creation of my full debut album, brimming with my favorite arrangements and original compositions, naturally. I’m starting to crowd-fund this endeavor in hopes that people who support the arts, who truly love my music, and who care about jazz will contribute to its creation. If you are interested in learning more about my album and supporting my future career, I invite you to visit my GoFundMe page, your contributions are greatly appreciated: https://gofund.me/ee37a113.
