We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominique Ayers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dominique , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I knew from a young age I never wanted to have your typical 9-5 job, I’ve always lived for freedom. Traveling, exploring new places and meeting new people was a priority for me. I see so many young people losing their youth to working, having to miss out on life changing opportunities due to X amount of time off etc. my goal for creating my business is to have a balanced life of working hard, but also living life to the fullest without being held back.
Dominique , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Dominique Ayers, I’m 23 and I am a master brow artist, specializing in permanent make up. Eyebrows have always been a passion of mine and once I found out about permanent make up I knew this career was meant for me. The correct brow shape and color can take years off of your appearance, add expression and most importantly boost your self-confidence. I’ve been in the industry for three years now and continuing education is a major key to success in an industry that is so new and constantly changing. I take pride in doing my microblading + shading trainings in Los Angeles California, where some of the best artists in the industry live/work. My style of Microblading is very natural but structured, yet very customizable to the clients wants and needs. Whether you’re looking for something very natural or a style that replicates how you wear your every day make up, your guaranteed to have the brows of your dreams. Microblading is extra great for people with alopecia or people who have gone through chemo and have lost their hair.
Living in a state where Microblading is not regulated it is so important to make sure your artist has their tattoo license and many hours of continuing education.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part about what I do is seeing the reactions of people once the procedure is done. From the smiles to the tears Microblading can truly be a life-changing experience. The other most rewarding part about what I do is hearing the feedback from their loved ones saying how much they love their brows and how they had no idea how beneficial it was to have the correct shape and color eyebrows.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My long-term mission is to create a permanent make up industry here based on supporting and helping individuals grow to the fullest extent. Permanent make up is so new in St. Louis and there aren’t a lot of resources, artists or education here that we need to create a successful industry. Having good support is so important in a career that can be so challenging to start. I want becoming a permanent make up artist to be more accessible for individuals thinking about starting this career.
