We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Dominika Bronner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Dominika, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I grew up in a country where less is more , you’re not supposed ask for too much ! Because what would the others think . Being an artist is being yourself being free ….. I did work for a long period of my life at a regular job but I wasn’t happy !
Dominika, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Born in Poland ( back then a very poor country) my parents moved with me to Germany for a better life . I never found myself fully though living in Germany. I also had a rough start , I didn’t know the language, I was bullied . After finishing my school I went to the USA to explore and to be Au -Pair for a whole year . This is where I met the love of my life , my husband . As a grown woman I was always looking for a place to live to find happiness. I worked for a very long period in the Beauty industry but after a while I realized I’m not getting where I want to be . So I studied at a Makeup Artist school . Couple years later , I won a Make up Artist competition which included a travel to Los Angeles to the Oscars where we was in charge of the makeup for a pretty famous German actress . My work as a makeup artist was published in a couple German magazines and on some famous blogs. After this awesome experience I realized we are made to achieve more for ourselves. Couple years later ,I moved with my husband and our four kids to the USA . I started to build up my brand immediately . I reached out to photographers, other makeup artists in the area which worked out pretty well . I worked hard to build up a perfect portfolio ( started already in Europe to build one ) and to connect with other creatives . But being a Make up Artist alone wasn’t enough for me. I had always a passion for fashion , my Gramdma designed clothes and was sewing these as well . I thought for a while to study fashion design but back then in Europe the schools were private and super expensive. So with a feel for fashion , I started to offer to my clients not only Makeup but also wardrobe styling. With great collaborations my portfolio grew for the wardrobe styling as well . So here I am , hustling in the Burgh ( Pittsburgh 😅) . Working with great local businesses, photographers and other wonderful creatives.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
For me the most rewarding aspect is , making my own schedule . This way I can be there for my family.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My travel to the Oscars
