We were lucky to catch up with Dominic O’Connor recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dominic , thanks for joining us today. Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
Around 4 years ago, a couple months before I was sent home from school due to COVID-19, a friend started teaching me how to make beats in FL Studio. Since that day I knew it was what I wanted to do as a career and I have been making music practically everyday since then.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a music producer and engineer from Chicago IL. I got into this industry through a friend teaching me to make beats on FL Studio. From there I worked on beats everyday and soon after beginning my production career I began my engineering career as my friends quickly wanted to put vocals on my beats so I began to teach myself how to record and mix vocals. Since then I have continued to learn and grow everyday as a musician. I try to help my clients make music that they love and my goal always has been to create good music that people want to keep coming back to. I’m an understanding person who easily sees the vision that my artist is going for and will do what it takes to make that vision come to life. I’m most proud of the progress I have made as a musician and the commitment I’ve made to mastering my craft.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I have two long term goals in terms of music. My first one is to become the best musician I can be, to reach my full potential. I want to put in my 10,000 hours 5 times over just to be the best version of myself that I can be. Secondly I want to create music that makes people want to come back and listen for decades after im gone. I want to make meaningful, good music that makes a positive impact on society.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
I don’t believe in non-creatives. We all have the ability to be a great creator it just takes practice and experimentation. I wanted to be a graphic designer, a painter, an actor, and a writer before I found music. None of those fields stuck with me until music. There’s something out there for everyone as long as your goal isn’t to make a lot of money!
