We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Dominic Jeudy. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Dominic below.
Hi Dominic, thanks for joining us today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Ahh man what a story we have! It’s been a rollercoaster! It all started from when I lost my job of 4 and a half years at an IT company in Feb of 2020. The IT company unfortunately got bought out by a bigger company and laid the whole staff off. I quickly realized the liability of working for another company, rather than myself. I then flew to California to clear my mind and think of the next steps to take in my life. During my time in California, I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone anymore. My friend (and than business partner) Stedman Hinds mentioned that the photobooth business was currently booming. Stedman being an accountant and a numbers guy, mentioned all the different ways to make money with a photobooth. Stedman and I were brainstorming ideas while hanging out with one of our friend’s, (and than business partner) Lawrence Totimeh. The brainstorming led to the three of us going into the photobooth business together. We decided to purchase a photobooth, buy the website, and create the logo all within that day. Weeks went by, and then Covid 19 started. When the pandemic started, California was the first state to go on lockdown. I quickly flew back home to Washington, DC. The three of us started to get worried because we still haven’t received the booth and California was on lockdown. More weeks went by, and we finally received the booth at the end of March. So excited, we began brainstorming some more, and coming up with more ideas of how we will profit with the photobooth. Not thinking about the length of the lockdown, months went by and we still didn’t get our first booking. Summer of 2020 went by, and the whole country was still on lockdown. Discouraged from the pandemic, the 3 of us began thinking if this was a good idea and even thought of selling the photobooth as well. Fast forward to March of 2021,and the lockdown finally over, we finally got our first event! It was a birthday party in downtown LA with cool vibes, fun games, and a beautiful rose gold decor. From there, we hit the ground running and started getting more bookings ranging from fortune 500 companies, celebrities, charities, corporate events etc.
Dominic, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a proud HAITIAN-American man, from Jamaica Queens. Rosedale to be exact! Who was always different and didnt want to follow the crowd. I always wanted to separate my style, personality, and etc., from other people. Growing up was tough, parents didn’t have a lot, but they always found a way. They were both born and raised in Haiti, moved to the US to create a better life for themselves and they definitely did! They raised my siblings and I to think positive, be kind, genuine, hustle our asses off, and be the best you can be at your craft. Even though we didnt have a lot, THEY WERE AMAZING PARENTS! I didnt always have the best shoes as a kid cause my parents couldn’t afford them, but they always made sure I still had clothes and shoes to wear on a daily basis. As a kid, I didn’t understand it. As I grew up, I feel that’s what humbled me at young age. Even though I was a class clown and kind of a menace lol, I didnt take things for granted and I was always super appreciative. It helped me mature at a young age, become an adult faster, and made me the man I am today.
***(How I got into this industry was explained in the previous page)***
We are a black owned, fun, positive vibes, dope photo booth company that services all kinds of events. We service all the states and beyond. We not only bring the excitement to an event, we bring quality customer service, and safety cleaning protocols to stop the spread of different sicknesses, germs, etc. Our customer service, fair pricing, and excitement for what we do, definitely separates us from the rest! We’ve done events for celebrities, big brands, and fortune 500 companies because of the quality of service we provide with the fair price that’s provided! We also have fun with our clients! We show our clients what it is to have a great time! We want the readers to understand the dynamic of quality and fun they’re going to have when they book us! We make sure to give them a service with memories they’ll cherish forever!
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
It definitely was a bumpy road! As mentioned before, we came up with the idea of starting a photobooth company right before the pandemic. With everything locked down, it definitely pushed us back significantly. It pushed us back and discouraged us so much, we thought about dismantling the business and selling the booth. We had no clue how long the lockdown would last, and if it was even worth continuing with everything. Something in our minds kept telling us to be patient, have faith, and everything will fall into place. Sure enough, it did! With all 3 of us having an entrepreneur mindset, we already knew running a business wouldn’t be easy. We persevered, didn’t give up, and the rest is history!
Can you open up about how you funded your business?
All of our capital has been organic. We haven’t taken out any loans, had any business funding, and haven’t gotten any grants yet (I have faith that’ll soon change)! We went from 1-3 events a month, to now having 2-5 events a week in both the east and west coast. This has been from the world opening up from covid and all the hard work that was put into building a success photo booth company! We also transitioned from being a proactive company to now being a reactive company. Instead of doing a lot of cold calls, we now get DMs on social media, emails, and calls to the business line to book an event! We want to soon have different charity events to bring help to the communities, and different company events to bring more exposure to our brand! Our goal is to soon expand to other countries as well! We want to be the defacto of the photobooth industry. Meaning, when someone is looking for a photobooth company for their event, they know to automatically call us to spice things up! Don’t be surprised if you see us on a billboard or going viral on social media sometime soon! I also want to send a big congratulations to than business partner Lawrence! He was able to get investors to invest in his own organization called LiberiaForward! They are building more agriculture and sustainable living in Liberia! Make sure to check them out online as well to see all the great things they’re doing! With that being said, we wish all the readers nothing but love, and positive vibes! Be blessed!
