We recently connected with Dominic Franco and have shared our conversation below.
Dominic, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When I first moved to Kansas City in 2020, I was amazed by how active and vibrant the dance community was (and still is). I loved getting to work with dancers from all over but noticed that almost all the dancers I was teaching would reach out about wanting to improve their dance technique. After giving it some though, I realized there was a need and desire for dancers to improve their technical abilities to help further their dance education. At the time, I was not sure if this would actually work or if I was way off with my prediction that there was a desire for this type of training. However, I felt that this could really work when I realized almost every dancer came to me saying the same thing: “I feel like I don’t focus on my technique as much as I should and I want to change that”. Another reason I figured that this idea could work was because I felt like the dancers that would reach out to me for help all had a goal in mind (i.e. training for college dance, working on new skills for a solo performance piece, etc.) which is how I was able to get my “specialization” in dance team technical training.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My company’s name is Dominate Technique and we are a dance technique training company that provides elite dance training to dancer’s around the nation with a specialization in dance team technique. I was on the Texas Tech Pom Squad from 2016-2018 which is where I found my passion for the dance team world. After graduation, I moved to Los Angeles where I performed professionally for cruise lines, national tours, and regional productions all around the states. In 2020, I became the first male dancer for the Kansas City Chiefs Cheerleaders which continued my love for dance team dancing and moved me from Los Angeles to Kansas City. Being in the dance team world from 2018 to the present really helped me get the idea to start Dominate Technique and I am forever grateful for the journey thus far! Since Dominate specializes in dance training to the young dancers today, I feel like I am most proud knowing that I get to be a small part of each dancer’s journey in life. There is so much more to dance than what people think. Dance teaches life lessons that are forever remembered and helps with a dancer’s personal growth. I love knowing that I get to be there for these dancers as both an instructor and mentor in life.

What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
What really helped build Dominate’s reputation (and what I am also very thankful for) was having been a part of two dance teams prior to starting the company. I was on the Texas Tech Pom Squad (which is a very competitive collegiate dance team) and also a cheerleader for the Kansas City Chiefs. Having those experiences on my resume while being very active in the Kansas City dance community really helped get exposure for when it was time to launch the start of Dominate.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I have always loved social media from the time I was in high school till now. When starting Dominate, I realized I felt most comfortable building an audience through instagram and facebook since it was what I knew best and it has been one of the best decisions I have ever made! I made sure to post content that I felt dancers would want to see (i.e. new skills, tips/tricks, “how to”, etc). Once I figured out what my social media “brand” was I was able to see how much of an asset social media could be. Dominate now has over 13,000 followers and continues to grow everyday. Advice for those just starting to build a social media presence is to find out what exactly you want your social media presence to be and be used for. Is it to educate? Is it to showcase? Whatever your niche is, remember that each post that has a specific intent will really help grow a following!
